Washington, Jan 24 (ANI): Only six of the previous Winter Olympics host cities will be cold enough to reliably host the Games by the end of this century if global warming projections prove accurate.
Even with conservative climate projections, only 11 of the previous 19 sites could host the Games in the coming decades, according to a new study from the University of Waterloo (Canada) and Management Center Innsbruck (Austria).
“The cultural legacy of the world’s celebration of winter sport is increasingly at risk,” said Professor Daniel Scott, a Canada Research Chair in Global Tourism and lead author of the study.
“Fewer and fewer traditional winter sports regions will be able to host Olympic Winter Games in a warmer world,” he said.

What happen this winter season is that the polar cold was diverted by a flex in the jet stream, that sent the greatest surge of cold over the Western Hemisphere, while what would have been the normally frigid winter that usually has encompassed the Sochi region was diverted at just a critical time for the Winter Olympics.
The greater picture is much more defined than it has been made out to be, but most people cannot see further than what is going on in their own street.
Greenland is probably actually getting a more than average increase in their seasonal ice coverage. But northern Siberia is not.

Warm temp in Russia is climate. Cold temp in North America is weather.

You don’t understand. As global warming leads to global cooling, global cooling leads to global warming.
Even if this happens, which is doubtful, would anyone really miss the winter Olympics? Few people wake up in the night worried about this non-crisis.
After we act like Chicken Littles about all of man's CO2 emissions, we can get a better perspective by eating a little pie chart:
1 - Record Setting Cold Temperatures:
Snow or ice does not disprove the existence of Global Warming. They are just anecdotal evidence of a temporary condition and cannot be regarded as valid indicators.
2 - Record Setting Warm Temperatures:
Drought, rain, storms, melting ice, or other unusual conditions are undeniable empirical evidence that man caused Global Warming is destroying the planet, and maybe even the entire galaxy.
Hey now, we got da Porcupine Mountains, and Crystal Mtn. and all dem other ski Mtns. We could easily do da Olympics in da UP, eh? And it sure as heck has been cold enough, we could have the figure skating on Lake Michigan, hockey on Pick Any Lake....

I saw a great article the other day by a climatologist (believe it was posted on this site) that said the sun, which provides all the external heat on earth, is in a decline that will likely lead to a mini ice age. When the sun's energy lowers, it affects the earth's jet stream causing large north/south elliptical sweeps across the planet. These huge swings lead to extremes, such as we now have in the U.S. with California baking and the rest of the country in a deep freeze.
