Gov. Rick Scott 'considers' backing in-state tuition for undocumented students [Florida]

Facing a tough fight for re-election and needing stronger Hispanic support, Gov. Rick Scott says he'll "consider" offering cheaper in-state tuition to some Florida college students who are undocumented immigrants.

Scott tiptoed around the subject Wednesday in a meeting with the Legislature's Hispanic caucus, offering tepid responses on an emotionally charged issue as new Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera sat alongside.

"I'll certainly consider it," Scott said before pivoting to a favorite talking point, the cost of tuition. "I want all tuition to stop growing."

Scott, who favored an Arizona-style anti-immigration law when he ran for governor in 2010, risks alienating some conservative Republicans if he embraces in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants. But Sen. Rene Garcia, R-Hialeah, chairman of the Hispanic caucus, offered Scott some advice.

"The number of Hispanic voters is growing," Garcia said. "This administration needs to take that into account."

Scott angered Hispanics last year by vetoing a bill that would have allowed undocumented immigrants to get driver's licenses in some cases. The bill passed the Legislature by an overwhelming margin.

Pressure is building on Scott to take a stand on in-state tuition because it is the Hispanic caucus' top priority and is supported by House Speaker Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel.

"I believe there's an injustice and an inequality for kids who are brought here based on no decision they ever made," Weatherford told the Times/Herald Tallahassee Bureau. "Right now there is a barrier for them furthering their education and I think that injustice should be rectified."

For the life of me I just cannot understand how anyone thinks this is a good idea.

What am I missing other than the usual RINO crap?

Insanity. And treason.

Georgian citizens who want to go to a Florida college given second class citizenship status behind Mexican invaders.

Anyone who supports a stupid idea like this dies not deserve the vote of a loyal American.

Yeah, like Floriduh is awash in money to give away. Oh, and doing this incentivizes more people to show up in Floriduh for yet another free handout (on top of what the Feds give away).

The stupid...it burns.

This would guarantee a loss.

He would gain few or no votes from the left and drive away a great many of the conservative voters he needs to win.

Why do successful republicans seem to lose their ability to think once in office?

Has the governor forgotten his job is to represent citizens, not illegals or carpet bagging consultants?

In that case, he might as well just hand over the governorship to Christ.

Is an undocumented student one who has not registered for class?

And the crazy thing is that an illegal Hispanic has more rights than a native born Hispanic.

A native born Georgian named Juan Cruz who just moved to Florida to go to school would have less rights than an illegal alien Hispanic named Juan Cruz from Mexico who just got off the boat who wanted to go to the same school.

America is suffering from mass insanity.

I don’t think he will get much of the illegal
vote. Republicans need to run undocumented candidates
in Florida, Arizona, California, New Mexico, and
for president or they will be left behind. If McCain
were younger he could renounce his citizenship and lead
us down to the future.

Turning over the governorship to Christ would be a good thing. Sadly Scott is running against Crist, who is a nearer to Judas.

He just appointed a Hispanic lieutenant governor...presumably to shore up the Miami Dade Cuban vote.

We don’t need to do this college crap. It isn’t right.

You nailed it. I guess FL is not much worse than any place else, but it does seem to be really bad in choosing officials.

And I thought nobody was racing to turn himself into a Democrat faster than Tom Corbett.

Scott lost me when he caved in to the National Lynch Mob to railroad Zimmerman. I wont vote for Chris either but neither can I vote for a political coward like Scott.

Unfortunately, FL is tending blue. More and more libs and illegals are moving into the state - just like TX. The insanity is spreading.

Oh you just had to push my button didn't you. :-)

Then again it does seem to be an issue with about 95% of the elected Rs. I have never seen a group where the "leadership" is so at odds with it's membership.Nor have I seen a non-communist gubment that so hates it's citizens.

The burning times are a comin'
