Kansas Senator Admits He Doesn't Have a Home in Kansas
NBC News ^ | 2/7/14 | Kasie Hunt

For an longtime Kansas Republican in trouble, there's no place like home.

Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., is facing a Tea Party primary challenge to his reelection this year from Dr. Milton Wolf -- a distant cousin of President Barack Obama.

Roberts was first elected to Congress in 1980, and was elected to the Senate in 1996. Now, though, the New York Times reports he's struggling to renew ties to the state as he battles to keep his job.

Roberts doesn't live in Kansas; instead, when he's there, he stays at the country club home of Phyllis and Cecil Ross, who have donated to his campaigns in the past. He lists their address on his voter registration.

The Times quotes Roberts as joking: "I have full access to the recliner."

Roberts does own property in Dodge City, Kan., and pays property taxes on it -- but he rents it out to tenants. He and his wife live in Alexandria, Va.

"He owns a residence in Dodge City, Kansas, that currently has tenants so he also rents a place to stay in Dodge City, Kansas, when he travels there," spokeswoman Sarah Little said Friday.

Little confirmed that Roberts pays rent from the donor couple, who own a home on Club View Drive in Dodge City.

Of the Times' piece, she said: "The story is misleading and ridiculous."

In a separate memo to media, Little called the New York Times report a "hit piece."

"The story is so slanted and so far from the truth that Kansans will not take it seriously," she said. "They know better."

As well it should. If you are going to run for Congress, you ought to think about how your wife will react and what is best for the family.

“”Little confirmed that Roberts pays rent from the donor couple””

Why in the dickens do I keep running into articles that need translation? I have no idea what the above means.

Not sure I can agree here but, I also don’t disagree with your view.

But, the practicality of maintaining two homes, rented or owned would be very expensive.

Yeah, I know they make $175k. So do I and more.

I don’t expect em to reside in an apartment. They need to entertain and if they have chillun an apartment seems confining to me.

Flame suit on.

5 words in they reveal he's a republican. If it had been a dem, you would have had to (gay) google him to find out.

You have evidence that Roberts had a home there in 2008?

How does that make him eligible in 2014?

The Times and NBC are engaging the battle to help the dems keep the senate.

I'm a firm believer any member of congress should have legal residence in their state and maintain such. We ask of our deployed troops often a period of over a year without seeing loved ones. Yet we treat those who are supposed to be representing our state and districts as royalty? Term Limits is one way to stop the mess. It would resolve a lot of issues really.

The highest represented part of the United States today is obviously Obamastan, District of Columbia. That is an issue the founders wrote specifically about so it suposidly would not happen. In their out of session time they should go home state and make themselves available to the citizens they serve. Their wife and kids should reside there in their home state also. Then maybe they'd pay closer attention.

Let me ask this:
Is he required to own a home? In the district?

Why is not reasonable for him to have a place to land, when he comes to KS, and can call home?

These guys spend the majority of their time in DC. Dies that disqualify them if they don’t own a home in their district?

Here’s the rest of the story. Roberts has lived in Washington since 1969 when he moved there from Arizona to join the staff of Kansas Representative Sebelius (father in law of Kathleen), a Republican from Western Kansas.

Roberts was from Topeka and Oskaloosa, his father was a big wig in the Kansas Republican Party. When he graduated from Kansas in 1957 he went into the Marines and when he got out, he went to Arizona to work as a journalist. So, he hasn’t really lived in our fair state since 1957.

I don’t know how often he goes to Dodge City, but I suspect that it’s about the same as the rest of the state - seldom.

It’s an election year so he has dragged his conservative suits and shirts out of the closet and will wear them until after election day. After that, it will be back with the good old moderate gear that he finds so comfortable.

I would prefer to have a Senator who knows his state, spends some time in it, represents the conservative political preferences of Kansas voters, and isn’t Washington beltway pol. Roberts doesn’t qualify on any of those counts.

I think Pat is sincere. He is much better in my eyes than Sebelius or Dole. Yes he supports big ag but Kansas is full of large family farms. I would ask him to run for POTUS before ANY ‘rat.

Senator Tom Harkin has not lived in Iowa for many many years. Has a P.O. Box and an apartment that he rents out in Indianola and a nice home in the Bahamas.
