“In Germany, theres collective guilt about Jews and the Holocaust; in America, a similar phenomenon shapes discourse around blacks and slavery.”
Bull.
I have no guilt about slavery.
None.
I took no part in it.
.
It seems that Mounk has a strong desire to sell books.
By his definition, parents or grandparents being victims of the Holocaust, Jews will cease to exist in another generation or so. A great many people will be very surprised to find that they’re not Jews.
Are today’s American whites responsible for slavery?
I’ve heard that before the advent of modern vaccinations and antibiotics, the life expectancy of a European in sub-Saharan Africa was under a year.
“(If history reminds me, wasnt it the blacks in Africa who rounded up some of their own kind and sold them into slavery?)”

Assume that you know nothing about the subject. Does anyone believe that white men could go to Africa and actually chase down and capture the people living there? It makes no sense, they would have no knowledge of the terrain or anything else about the African continent while those who lived there would know the terrain and how to deal with the existing hazards.
I thought most of the African Slave Traders were Arabs.
People may "define" their "identities" based on ideas about past oppression, but that doesn't imply that present-day members of the group they refuse to identify because of past oppression with are "responsible" for things that happened long before their birth. Those are two very different questions, right?
Silly argument. Long before Hitler, Germans defined themselves by not being French. Poles defined themselves by not being German or Russian. Ukrainians defined themselves by not being Polish or (sometimes) by not being Russian. Italians, I suppose defined themselves by not being Austrian. But nobody today ascribes to present day Frenchmen responsibility for what Louis XIV or Napoleon did.
I think you are correct about traders but what I refer to is who actually CAUGHT the people and sold them to the traders. This appears to have been mostly a case of people from one tribe capturing and selling people from another tribe. Someone had to know how to go about capturing these people and I don’t think just anyone could do it.
Of course they don’t mention that part of it, it doesn’t fit the “agenda.”
