"There will be a major fish die off on the inland lakes this year."

After a statement like that, I would venture you do not own a single pair of long johns.

I wear long johns like a second skin during the winter.

I’ve never heard of it happening but it wouldn’t be inconceivable for a polar bear to show up in the upper peninsula. Its only about 300 miles from the southern tip of Hudson bay to the north shore of lake Superior.

“The ice cover on the largest freshwater lake in the world”

Isn’t Lake Bailkal the largest lake?

Baikal is definitely largest by volume. By surface area Superior is looks bigger but I’m not going to go looking tonight.

Isnt the first time it froze over, and wont be the last.

1976 it froze over and I believe that Michigan froze over that year. They would freeze over lots more but the wind takes care of any ice formation. If it is still, the thing would freeze over more times.

These freaks like Al Gorebull warming, just cant understand that cycles happen all the time. BTW, if I remember right, the years 1976 or 77, summer was hot.

Its about 110 miles across from Munising to the Canadian shore, A friend of mine took me across one summer day years ago, we returned the next.

I have been out several times on, what we call, the big reef fishing for Lakers. That is about 30 miles out.

Don’t doubt it at all. Beau is a ‘Curb and Gutter Man’ and he’s been called out a few times this winter to help with broken/frozen water mains on newer build-outs. Two local towns are asking their residents to ‘keep the water running’ at all times in one sink in the house to avoid frozen pipes.

I have lived at my farm for 22 years - my bathroom SINK is frozen solid somewhere down the pipeline. Annoying as heck, but my furnace still works! :)

The FROST is FIVE FEET THICK this season - we’ll be LUCKY to get anything in the ground before the end of May.

Food crops are REALLY going to suffer this year. ‘Little’ Ice Age, my Aunt Fanny! It’s here and it’s going to be BRUTAL for the next decade of growing seasons.

And if I’m WRONG, and I HOPE I am - then all will be right again. :)

The “experts” say it’s a “pause” in global warming - yeah, I predict around April things will get warm again and by August . . . hoo boy, look out, it’ll be really warm.

My sister was out walking around the city lakes one winter with a guy she met from Australia. At one point he asked what the buildings were out on the lake, and she said they were ice fishing. Of course that needed more of an explanation, that they drill holes in the ice and catch fish.

He thought she was pulling his leg until she took him out to one!

I couldn’t help myself. Every news story has either an existing song lyric or is ready to rewrite a new one. I have been in rehab for 5 years to not do it. But Superior freezing and the Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald were made for each other.

OK, ok, ok.

I have to ask.

What is an ‘Ice expert’???

What’s that final exam like?

What are the atmospheric conditions required for ice?

Would your thesis look something like,

Would there be weather if there was no Al Gore?

Lake Superior hasn’t completely frozen over in two decades.

Not true, it's actually frozen two other times in the last ten years, supposedly the historical average is once every twenty-five years.

Yes. My laundry room sink water line froze earlier, but we were able to get it going again by keeping a fan blowing on it and the cabinet door ajar. Both the laundry room (on one end of the house) and the master bath (on the other end of the house) were add-ons and are built over crawl spaces — not the basement. I have to watch both areas carefully during cold periods. I haven’t had trouble in 20 years, but the freezing water lines are back again this year.

A sign of hope! We’re going to have temps in the 30’s tomorrow. Maybe my sink will thaw? It’s the little things in life that make me happy! :)
