A unicorn in every tank to improve gas mileage and overall job satisfaction!

I don’t think that you can do much better than that even as a turbo-diesel

Over 90% of trucks are turbo-diesel already.

Lighter, less powerful trucks carry less cargo. So you will need tow or three of them to move the same weight.

You solved the puzzle.
If you voted for Obama you are either ignorant or evil. Obama is both ignorant and evil.

I’m surprised he hasn’t mandated that all trucks need 24 wheels since if extra air will increase mpg, then more wheels = more mpg...

Don’t give him any ideas, with his mentality he may do it:)

See my post 60 about CA truck regs. Put a lot of small truckers out of business.

Does this mean that trucks will be even slower and more dangerous on upgrades?

Yes, trucks will be even more dangerous.

"Seems to me that they could improve the mileage of big rigs either by tweeking the engines or the transmissions."

I work in the field, in the air induction end of it, and I can assure you that "tweeking" to get even 1/20 mpg would be cause for raises and parties like you can't believe.

Trucks have to meet an exacting standard that are set by the fleet owners already. The large fleet owners know that even a tiny MPG change can make big differences in the bottom line at the end of the year, but they also have to get X amount of weight up X grade while going X fast. They are always going back and forth with the different manufactures beating them up on this. Truck makers know this, they know umpteen millions will go to whichever manufacturer can prove they can do it cheaper with comparable maintenance costs. The market is already trying to do what he is demanding, and this idiot is too stupid to understand that.

If Obama even had a vague idea of the amount of money being spent to do what he is talking about here he wouldn't be the laughing stock of the industry he is today for saying this.

Improving gas mileage of vehicles has never reduced fuel consumption. It has raised the number of miles traveled relative to what would have been the case at a given price for fuel and state of the economy. For the big rigs it will simply force weight of loads to decrease and number of rigs to rise and will probably actually increase the amount of fuel required as it takes more fuel to operate two smaller trucks carrying the same payload than to operate one larger truck.

I used to earn a bonus when I averaged 6.5 mpg while driving in the 80's.

The company mandated a 6.5 mpg at one point, and everyone threatened to quit since it wasn't possible to mandate an mpg. Even accounting types understood it.

The bonus went away after mgmt figured out that if the drivers just added a few gallons of diesel (out of pocket) half way through the trip, mpg improved significantly for the entire day and some drivers consistently earned bonuses ... which made mgmt look like fools when they couldn't duplicate the mpg when covering routes on vacations runs.

Now, how about getting rid of ultra low sulfur fuel?

Those truck drivers should make sure their tires are properly inflated.

One of the current problems with switching to NG is the problem of refueling. Currently it takes something like 10 times longer to fill up by repressuring an NG “gas tank” than it does to simply dump diesel fuel or gasoline into a tank.

This is stupid and ignorant. Yes absolutely and totally ignorant.

I have driven big rigs and currently drive an F350 Superduty Ford diesel. I do not put fuel in it just because I love to spend money. I pull heavy trailers and need the weight for stability going down the road. One has to have enough weight in the truck to keep the trailer behind them where it belongs.

The only way they will make these trucks get better mileage is to take weight out of them. That will cause people to die. This is stupid and dangerous.

It does not surprise me that the clown in the White House exists in total ignorance of the real world of Trucks and all the whats and whys and why nots. In this case his politically driven stupidity is going to get people killed.

If anyone doubts what I say just go and ask anyone who actually works a truck for a living.

I hate stupid people. The Dems better take away his pen or they will never win another purple state where people still work equipment and trucks for a living.
