Simferopol, Ukraine (CNN) -- [Breaking News Update, 10:02 a.m. ET] (CNN) -- Russia's upper house of parliament voted Saturday to approve the use of military force in Ukraine. The vote was unanimous.

[Original Story, published 9:23 a.m. ET]

(CNN) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked the upper house of parliament for approval to send Russian troops into Ukraine's Crimea region to normalize the political situation there, the Kremlin said Saturday.

Due to the "extraordinary situation in Ukraine," Putin said, there are threats to the lives of Russian citizens and Russian military personnel based in the southern Crimean region.

It comes on the same day that the new pro-Russian leader of Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, asked Putin for help in maintaining peace in the Black Sea peninsula -- where Russia has a major naval base at Sevastopol.

Maggie

I am afraid by mobilizing they fall into the bear trap.

Putin has already used his special forces and biker friends to replace over 30 mayors in the region. They are now asking to be protected from the Ukriane. The navy has defected.

My only question is will he get the whole country. So far no one has done anything. I think if no one challenges him with the freezing of assets of the elites he won’t stop. The billionaires have much more power over Vlad than Bambi and the EU

Ukraine doesn’t have a strong enough military force to go up against Russia....and they know it. I guarantee though, the Ukraine’s will get just enough blood flowing to force intervention by the International community.....like was attempted in Syria’s early war...you’ll see the thuggary enter the arena in short time, alive and active.

Best Putin puts a lid on it all..sooner the better. And he will to protect his Ports, Navy and Russian people there, though of course they are the last on his lists of concerns.

This is why Putin acted rapidly....he understands the “other” dingbats on the stage there and does not second guess them....as Obama always does.

Sorry but Ukranians should let Chemia remain Independant from them....that would resolve the situation immediately.

I agree caww, but it’s not about the ports, it’s about the gas and he will keep going north to secure them. I don’t disagree he needs the ports but more importantly he needs the hard currency from the gas.

Thank you for all your great work on this board.

I often wonder how many frantic calls go out from this administration when there’s any crisis on the World Stage...they are clueless on their own.

Here is who they are the ak74 with the long clip gives them away.

Everyone is curious who those unmarked men in unforms that have been seen in youtube clips from the Crimea are. Courtesy of Russian blogger Lev Shlosberg who writes for the newspaper Pskovskaya Guberniya, we now have an answer: according to him they are the officers of the 76th Chernihov (Pskov) Storm Troops Division and have slowly dispersed across key choke points in Ukraine.

From his post, translated by Interpretermag.com

According to one of the participants in the operation, officers and contractors of the 76th Shock Troops Division have been re-locating to Ukrainian territory since last week. By early this week, there were already more than 100 soldiers. The last of the famous detachments was sent on Thursday, 27 February. They are fully armed, with 5,000 rounds of ammunition per person. There is one truck per 10 soldiers, and they are completely loaded with weapons including flame-throwers. Upon arrival on the territory of Ukraine, they did not report their geographical locations to people, and they were assigned local tasks. Most likely, this was Sevastopol and Simferopol. Emergency troops remain in Yysk, and did not take part in the operation. The barracks of the 76th Storm Troops Division on Margelova Street in Pskov is practically empty.

Some background on the 76th:

....”Watch how Romania, Poland and some of the other nations in that region react. Also what is China thinking?”.....

They’ll not get involved but will guard their own borders....they won’t want an influx of people if people start to leave Ukraine.

China is ALWAYS watching for opportunity to make their own moves in any crisis...they like it when there’s distractions away from them for obvious reasons.

However, Russia and China have been walking hand in hand for quite awhile now...even so they are not “friends”....they both figure with the World Stage is at it’s been, and the US weakened, they fair better in joint affairs for the time being...but they both do not trust the other..nor should they.
