The Cold War is over and the slow death facing us of undertaking to defend the whole world should be over too. We gave Europe a chance to recover from WWII by huge expenditure of blood and money and we don’t owe Europe and the world a thing. Nor will our security be threatened by allowing a recovered Europe to once again see to its own balance of power.
The irony is that for small, nearly defenseless enemies some people advocate immediate military actions, but for enemies with major militaries such as Russia there are calls for restraint for various reasons.
Barack Obama should tune them out and reflect on how Cold War presidents dealt with far graver clashes with Moscow.
When Red Army tank divisions crushed the Hungarian freedom fighters in 1956, killing 50,000, Eisenhower did not lift a finger. When Khrushchev built the Berlin Wall, JFK went to Berlin and gave a speech.
And I'll bet at the time ol' Pat was horrified by Ike's and Jack's liberal wimpiness and beating the war drums with full gusto.
But of course now Communism has "fallen" and all American military power does now is benefit those conspiratorial Jews, so things are different. Pat goes from "warmonger" to peacenik.
Hasn't Pat heard that some of his racial brothers are part of the Ukrainian resistance to Putin? He needs to get with the program!
That's funny. I thought most Israelis supported Putin in this because the anti-Putin Ukrainians are allegedly a bunch of Nazis?
Do you also blame Likud for "gay rights" and NSA spying? Maybe they're in control of water fluoridation too?
I partially agree with you - Western Europe could defend itself if it’d back off its socialist / green fantasies. And it should, on both accounts.
However... we have seen from history what happens if Europe is left to its own devices. What makes you think anything has changed? The EU? Hah!
Russia historically desires empire. What makes you think that has changed? It sure looks to me like they merely had a bit of a setback due to adopting a fundamentally poor performance system for a while.
Still, forget Russian expansionism for a moment. It’s not actually the biggest consideration:
We, yes WE, in cahoots with the Russians, stripped the Ukraine of its 5000 nukes, in return for promised protection. And now we are to say “sorry, you’re just not important to us?” Or, “Sorry, we’ve lost our stomach” (or maybe it’s our soul, come to think of it.) IMO, that makes us more evil than anything someone might conjure up about the old KGB guy... Maybe even the Muslims — at least they know what they freaking stand for.
I digress from my main point, though: Every nuclear capable (but not yet in the club) nation is watching. There are a bunch of them. Is that enough of a clue?
To hear them talk, Iraq and Afghanistan weren't "mistakes" but great triumphs. How many times have we heard the refrain about how great things are in Iraq and Afghanistan because of "free and democratic elections (TM)", and how the Arab spring has been nothing but a geopolitical blessing? I've never once heard any of the talking heads admit that they were wrong about any of it.
Nah, just the war mongering neocons.
