AUSTIN, Texas -- An Austin, Texas, technology company says 20 of its employees were aboard the Malaysia Airlines plane that went missing over the South China Sea.

Jacey Zuniga, a spokeswoman for Freescale Semiconductor, says 12 Malaysian and 8 Chinese employees are "confirmed passengers." She says no American citizen Freescale employees were on the flight.

That’s terrible, but why does a US company have that many foreign employees?

A reasonable answer, which may be the case for this, is that they are supplying parts to Chinese electronics manufacturers (board level), and the support office is in Malaysia.

The reality is that Texas Instruments has a plant in Malaysia. As to why that plant isn't in the USA, while chip manufacturing is indeed _very_ hazardous work, the regulations on it go beyond reasonable now in the US, not to mention energy costs (for both manufacturing and transport to customers).

They probably work in an Asian plant.

Don’t know? Here is a link to their website. http://www.freescale.com/

I am wondering if there is a connection between plane disappearance and perhaps a scheduled business trip.

Seems like a trivial number to me.

Apple has 23,000 overseas employees.
Ford has 120,000 overseas employees.
ExxonMobil has 25,000 overseas employees.

I don’t post here often but when I read this something inside me said hmmm. 20 employees on same flight with semiconductor knowledge. Probably a coincidence....

It's obviously bad for the "team" to travel together when bad things happen.

Otherwise it's all good.

I’m just thinking out loud here but does TI manufacuture any of the chips found in the electronic voting machines?

I would bet that they were not 20 upper-level decision makers for Freescale. Sounds ghoulish, I know, but most companies I’ve worked for in the past 30 years had strict policies about upper management traveling together, for just this reason.

Can you imagine the future of Freescale Semiconductor if it turns out that a large portion of their Board of Directors was on that airplane?

There are plants in the US; IBM recently built a new one in NY state.

High tech such as that gets a lot of "romance" benefits from government to build plants.
