Medal of Honor recipient to be buried today

A funeral service with a special graveside ceremony is scheduled Saturday afternoon to honor Walter Ehlers, a Medal of Honor recipient from World War II.

Ehlers single-handedly took out enemy gun nests during the D-day invasion and drew fire to himself to save other soldiers. He died Feb. 19 at 92 of kidney failure. He will be buried at Riverside National Cemetery with full military honors at 1 p.m., said Jim Ruester, spokesman for the cemetery.

Seating has been set up for 500 people. The Army's 1st Infantry Division will send a three-star general and 32 soldiers from Kansas to provide pall bearers, a color team and a rifle team. Several other Medal of Honor recipients will fly in to attend.

Patriot Guard Riders, 200 strong, were invited by SSG Ehlers himself. I was so honored to have attended this service today for one of America's true Heroes.

I’ve seen Mr. Ehlers many times on The History Channel. I believe his older brother was killed on D-Day. Thank you Sargent Ehlers for your service. Thank you for my freedom.

Amongst his recognition as a war hero, this was also the man who spent many years as a security guard at Disneyland of whom many charming stories are told. I think he's in line to be recognized as a Disney Legend.

Medal of Honor, Silver Star, three Purple Hearts, and lived a fantastic life doing what he loved until he passed away at age 92. Take that, Hitler.

SSG Ehlers also spent 29 years working for the Veterans Administration as a benefits counselor where he helped many vets in need. He was an incredible man.

If you ever get the opportunity to meet one in person, take it.

Only a small part of the Medal of Honor represents what they did on the battlefield. The majority represents their personal character, and that of their family, friends, city or town, teachers and fellow soldiers, that helped shape that character.

It represents what is best about America.

I met four of them at the funeral service for SSG Ehlers just yesterday. Of the 464 Recipients from WWII only 7 survive. They are indeed a rare breed.

I got to spend a couple of hours with Mitchell Paige (USMC - Guadalcanal) at his home right here in La Quinta, CA......his wife and my mother were DAR buddies, and she got it arranged for me to meet with him and have him autograph my "Mitchell Paige G.I.Joe".

His 'study' was amazing, and chock full of memorabilia....I've got photos someplace.

There is now an institute named after MoH recipient Joe Foss whose purpose is to improve civics instruction in the schools. I found out about it recently, and it impresses me as a brilliant idea, and one that should be expanded upon.

Imagine, for example, if a conservative with deep pockets could publish millions of books, annually revised, about American civics, and mail each one for free to every incoming high school freshman in the United States.

Typically there are about 20 million high school students in public, private and parochial in the US, about 6 million of them being freshmen.

It would be the equivalent of using a thermonuclear device against the corruption of students by leftism. It might set their efforts back 50 years.

Just on the surface it would cause an utter panic among Democrats, who would likely try to coerce students to bring in their books so they could be destroyed. Which would by itself be hilarious.

It needs just three elements:

1) The compilation of a list of students in the US as well as their mailing address. This is not as hard as it sounds because so many scoundrels want such lists for nefarious purposes that they are widely available.

2) The writing and publishing of the books with scrupulous accuracy, but discreetly, so there is no advance warning.

3) The bulk mailing of the books all at once.
