White House Threatens to Veto Bills that Aim to Keep Executive Power in Check

The White House issued veto threats on Wednesday for a pair of bills reining in executive overreach that debuted and were debated on the House floor.

The Executive Needs to Faithfully Observe and Respect Congressional Enactments of the Law (ENFORCE the Law) Act of 2014 puts in place a procedure that would expedite the ability of the House or Senate to sue the executive branch for failure to faithfully execute the laws. Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), a former prosecutor who introduced the bill, said a three-judge panel at the federal district court level followed by direct appeal to the Supreme Court is necessary so that the president can’t stall litigation until his term is up.

The Office of Management and Budget said in the veto threat that it “strongly opposes” the bill “because it violates the separation of powers by purporting to permit the Congress to challenge in court the exercise by the President of one of his core constitutional functions—taking care that Federal laws are faithfully executed.” …

Like a lot of good intention bills, this one is a bad idea. Think of how a Democrat congress will abuse it with a Republican president.

A President would Veto a bill directed at limiting their Executive Power? What a surprise(NOT).

Not defending 0bama here necessarily, but ANY President would Veto any such bill, except for maybe George Washington.

If the House was being run by Americans instead of self-serving a-holes in both parties, it would simply deny funds for any and all activities that follow from lawless executive orders. Under the Constitution as properly understood, the House holds the ultimate veto power, the power to close the purse.

Even corrupt political scum, like so many in the current federal workforce, will not work for nothing.

If a republican president is ignoring the laws he/she doesn’t agree with, shouldnt they be challenged?

Obama is such and ass and the congress made up of so many fools and cowards, if they impeached it, it would simply veto the impeachment and congress would say, “Oh, I didn’t know he could do that”.

You are SO right. ANY ‘show’ of our government acting on ‘our’ behalf is just that - a show.

this comment is indirectly connected to obazo’s hubris but the biggest test the US government staged to test just how far they can go in controlling American citizens is when Kent State students were shot dead and when the Clintons murdered Christians in Waco TX and got away with it. Not one person in government, except for Vince Foster, ever paid for either of those crimes as the people did nothing. Doing nothing for such government crimes just sanctions their actions. And now we have obozo the fraud running over us like a steam roller and we still do nothing.

Obama was stupid for the threat. This is going nowhere in the Senate.

This is actually subterfuge so Trey Gowdy and Bob Goodlatte can pass amnesty later and say Obama has to enforce the law.

A good thing that this and other bills are going nowhere. Maybe they just wanted to get the veto threat so that La Raza wont punish House leadership too much.

Who actually thought he would ever sign such a law, maybe that dumb ass hat Sheila Jackson? She wouldn’t know if a law was a good one or a bad one.

He is snubbing his nose at existing laws and they think passing another law is going to make him line up with laws already on the books.

What are they thinking? (rhetorical)

In this situation, you’re talking as if the Democrat congress is acting logically. In reality, a democrat congress would find any / all loopholes they could, exaggerate, make stuff up if they have to in order to enforce this law.

Where we see it as a tool to rein in an out of control imperial presidency, they’d see it as a tool to usurp power away from a Republican president. And they’d do it every chance they got. From Inauguration Day to the end.
