To say we don’t know what happened by now, I believe, is a lie.
I believe Barrycades knows. By now. With all the assets and satellites and snooping ability we have.
I wonder if it’s part so they can do what they want to do with it to us, before we “officially” find out. So they can carry out whatever plan they have with it.
Or that they can secure the IC people in China that we’ll never find them.
Its obvious that whoever disabled the tracking systems, altered course and altitude was a skilled pilot and very knowledgeable of the 777. If the investigation excludes the passengers consider the following scenario. The young twenty six year old co pilot once took girls into the cockpit and probably considered himself a stud. Suppose he made a pass at one of the flight attendants and she told him to get lost. Young men when they are frustrated and humiliated sometimes do impulsive things. The jet reaches its cruising altitude and bearing, the fifty three year old pilot leaves the cockpit to go to the bathroom. By now the young co pilot transforms his anger by imagining himself a jihadist who will seek martyrdom by killing his mostly infidel Chinese passengers. He locks the cockpit door, disables the tracking devices, climbs to 45,000 feet to kill or disable the passengers and crew, flies the plane toward Mecca, and finally crashes into the ocean when he runs out of fuel.

More likely is that the terrorist network observed his lax cockpit behavior and took advantage of easy access.
I read they’re searching the home of the older pilot.
Doesn’t it seem odd he’d build a simulated cockpit just because he likes flying so much?
In response to your scenario:
There are those that would say, “What a devoted young man.” (To Islam, that is.)
I look at it this way and is why I think the information is so muddled.
You have a Muslim country Malasia that loses a plane headed to an Infidel country, China.
Two more nearby Infidel countries Vietnam and India get involved.
The Infidel USA also gets involved even though the plane is not one of our airliners, and the plane was not going to or from the USA. and it was not primarily carrying American passengers and it happened on the other side of the world from us.(Our interest is to find out if the 777 was defective because we have many of them, and if it was terrorism can it pose a threat to us.)
You throw in the several different languages and cultures involved and it contributes to the mess.
To that add in the various military and their secretive nature about what their satellite and radar capabilities are.
Not to mention the dislike and distrust between all of the countries involved.
Bottom line - The countries involved have different interests and agendas, cooperation will be a problem, and it could take years to muddle through this mystery. -Tom .
No, it isn’t. Even many Freeper pilots thought this would not be uncommon for a pilot.
The pilot had a very expensive and complex Boeing 777 flight simulator in his home. Was this where he could practice for his crime away from prying eyes?
The pilot and copilot were devout Muslims.
The plane was deliberately stolen and hijacked.
Then the plane climbed to 45,000 feet - 2000 feet above the aircraft’s service ceiling - this could only have been to kill all the passengers. There is no other reason to do this. This plane was handled masterfully the entire time - whoever did this was a fox, not a fool.
The plane could only then have a value as one of two things:
1.) Some valuable cargo (Gold has been speculated)
2.) The aircraft itself.
If it’s the aircraft, then it could only have been to be reloaded with explosives and sent off on a terror mission.
It wasn’t pilot suicide as the plane flew on for 7 hours and flew below the radar deliberately. If it was suicide, he could have just crashed it on takeoff or anywhere else.
Something far bigger and nastier is being plotted.
All Western nations and especially Israel should be on alert and all 777s should be carefully monitored for anything suspicious.
This one can fly under the radar tailing a 777 full of passengers. The one full of passengers gets shot down over a body of water and disappears while this one takes its place.
It flies on to the destination undetected, as the pilot will set the transponder to match the signal of the downed plane. Then this plane can fly into any city it wants... then at the last second divert to a nuclear facility or some other high value target.
This was not suicide, but something else.
All on board except the pilot and conspirators are dead.
This is probably not over.

And once all the insurers and their bankers understood gold was the target, it would be best if the plane is never found.
The total liability in this case is billions and endless trials and investigations.
It explains all the nation’s leaderships’ silence, too. If China said ‘hey! my gold was on that flight!’ and salvage rights applied, that plane would be found by the guys that found the Titanic in 18 hours.
It only takes one pilot to yell “jihad” or “Allah” and you’re screwed.
Me, I rarely fly as I don’t like the fact someone else is controlling my fate.
If I knew I was about to board a plane that had muzzie pilots would I fly on that plane?

Perhaps, but I need many more facts. And there are, indeed, MANY dead areas our satellites don’t constantly track. You know where they are, and some are no mystery, and it’s not that tough to pull this off with the right people.
But there is sure not enough public evidence, implicit or explicit, that allows any reasonable conclusions to be reached.
The problem I have with that scenario is this: They did all this planning and didn't think of something as simple as "do I have enough fuel to do what I have planned?"
They were experienced on this aircraft...you would know how far they could go on the fuel they had. If the goal was suicide...there is no need to disable the communications, ACARS and transponder. You just crash it.
1. Agree. It would be easy to put the aircraft into a “cross controlled departure” which would be very hard to recover from and would put tremendous stress on the aircraft, likely leading to catastrophic airframe failure.
2. I don’t find it unusual for a pilot to build a simulator in his house. As a professional he wants to be good at his job and there are many systems/scenarios to rehearse and to be prepared for.

Hundreds, perhaps thousands of Airline pilots worldwide build simulator cockpits at home.
In addition, of course, to millions of ordinary folk who really like Flight Simulator. If I had the room, and the money, I would love such a project myself.
It's the only computer "game" that has ever attracted me.

I've got a couple thousand "sim" hours with MS FS (and a few hundred with Orbiter). I had modified my own aircraft in my "hanger" and actually had built my own airport outside of College Station.
About 5-10 years ago I was actually flying in the virtual world...with other FS "pilots" guided by real guys simulating ATC. I was part of 2 virtual flight airlines. Started off flying a shuttle route and worked my way up to the 737....flying domestic on one airline...and was flying long hauls on a 747 and 767 on the other.
Although my favorite time was flying my SR-71 and asking ATC for clearance to 70K+.
