As Sunday’s referendum, in which the people of Crimea will decide whether to join Russia, approaches, the images on Russian television are astonishing. They are more propagandistic and venomous than anything I can remember even from Soviet times. Breathless presenters whip up hysteria with bloodcurdling stories of atrocities being committed by the “neo-Nazi junta” now governing Ukraine. Overheated “victims” beg Putin to help, kindly Russians offer to give refuge to the terrified people fleeing Ukraine, and menacing music accompanies montages of swastikas, fascist thugs armed with clubs, and black-and-white images of Hitler’s troops and burning villages.
It is all apparently aimed at preparing the public to accept that there may be war, and that Russia will be fighting in a just cause. Yet I have a horrible feeling that President Putin believes all this stuff. He receives his information mainly from his trusted secret services – men like himself, schooled in the dark arts of KGB disinformation. I worked as a media consultant to the Kremlin from 2006 to 2009, close enough to gain a sense of Putin’s growing paranoia.

While I agree with you, I think you are gong to get slammed by some who love obama, but hate Putin, love the party of the democrat and RINOs, but claim to hate communism.

The West or US doesn’t understand when Hitler invaded Ukraine on it’s way to Russia he was hail by the people and Russia watched in horror.
Of the two men, Putin and Obama, if I had to ascribe ‘paranoid’ or mentally ill or any other ‘head’ issues to one of them, it would be Obama. We already know he’s a flaming narcissist, to the peril of America ... and that’s just for starters.
That's because Russia had already militarily occupied Ukraine and wanted it for itself.

Less than ten years earlier the Russians of the Soviet Union killed millions of Ukrainians and others in the Ukraine in what is now termed as the Holodomor genocide. Consequently, many Ukrainians were grateful to almost anyone no matter how nasty who would help them to avenge Ukrainians against the people who murdered millions of Ukranians by the artificial famine, political terrorism, and police state executions.
The thing about wanting to exterminate Jews didn’t particularly bother most Ukrainians at the time. Many of the apparatchiks involved in Holodomor and the razkulachivaniya programs had been Jewish and between Poles, Ukrainians, and Jews there had never been much love lost. Ukrainians often spoke of ridding Ukraine of both the ‘Yid’ and the ‘Yack’ (the Jew and the Pollack)... There would be something wrong if there were not some number of unreconstructed Nazis walking around in the Ukraine but, by the same token, every family in Russia lost at least one person to the Nazi onslaught and there is no reason to think Russians would be happy about Nazis taking over the Ukraine now.
The current leaders of the Ukraine are overwhelmingly ethnic Russians and want to have nothing whatsoever to do with being a part of Russia or living under Russian autocratic control. They too remember all too well waht happens to people living under the control of the KGB, NKVD,and CHEKA secret police of which Putin is a former and current officer. While there are most certainly a number of NZI sympathizers in the Ukraine, they have no political representation in the Ukraine and no significant influence upon the governance of the Ukraine. Stalin and his successors in Russia turned against the Jews, so Russia is no better than soem of the worst Ukrainians with respect to the safety of those victimized populations, and they are a lot worse given the current Ukrainian mood of puting an end to such discriminations.
Parroting Putin’s increasingly strident and false propaganda accusing Ukrainians of NAZI atrocities makes you a rather obvious apologist for the Russian crimes currently being perpetrated in the Ukraine and In Russia as well, as russian opponents of the Putin regime are being arrrested, abducted, and/or intimidated for their opposition to Putin’s incresingly autocratic regime.
Paranoid people think other people are paranoid.
Remember the Charge of the Light Brigade? It was because Russia wanted Crimea, and lost it in the Crimean War of 1853-1856, against an alliance of France, Britain, the Ottoman Empire, and Sardinia.
Officially their excuse at the time was that they wanted to protect the Russia Orthodox Christians in Crimea from the Catholics and Muslims. Though in practical terms, the reason is that Crimea offers Russia a warm water port for its navy.
This matters so much to Russia that when the Soviet Union was falling apart, they insisted on a 50 year lease on the port in exchange for peacefully allowing Ukraine to leave; but even in their decrepit state, Russia would have been willing to fight Ukraine for Crimea.
The most recent problem was Ukraine’s overtures to Europe, as that could have effectively neutered Russia’s navy in Crimea. But with the horrific H1N1 influenza that devastated and terrified Ukraine, they foolishly threw out their pro-western government and voted in a pro-Russian government.
Russia was all sweetness and light to Ukraine with a pro-Russian government, until it was so obnoxious that it was recently overthrown. And Russia so counted on Ukraine being friendly, and even becoming a close ally, that its invasion of Crimea represents “sour grapes”.
You have some reason for not believing in democracy??
Democracy can make bad mistakes immediately after disasters. In this case, the public blamed the pro-western government for failing to deal with the terrible flu epidemic that killed a lot of Ukrainians.
Sounds more to me like they had a choice of going with the EU/IMF/Soros/Rothschild monetary system (like Italy, Portugal, and Ireland) or going with Russia, i.e. they decided they’d rather live than die...
