I’ll laugh if the newly added EU countries empty themselves out into Old Europe trying to get away from the Russians.

The Swiss were smart to vote “no” on open borders.

Well, Obama has already taken the military off the table specially in the Ukraine, and by implication, the region. (Here)

They are in NATO aren’t they? If attacked, we are shooting back.

Putin is no fool. He will finish assimilating all of the non NATO countries, and antagonize Israel at the same time. He will do as much as he can where we will not fight him.

Then he sets up relations with central And South America.

Bulgaria was invaded by the Soviet Union in 1944. I would imagine that the people remember their history.

I'm beginning to have doubts. We certainly don't seem to remember ours...or Europe's either for that matter.

I’ll believe they’re worried when they increase their defense spending, which really needs to be 6% or more of GDP instead of the 1% or 2% they’re currently spending, since they’re front-line states.

I think one can safely say that the failure of NATO to defend one of the member countries, in the case of a military attack and invasion would clearly lead to the collapse and dissolving of NATO as a military defense organization, since the core purpose of NATO is precisely that — for — the member nations.

It's a nice theory, but that's not happening. The purpose of NATO isn't mutual defense - it's to bind Uncle Sam to Europe's defense. Europe will stay in NATO because it offers a security blanket, and the alternative is to spend big bucks on defense, which they can't do without either destroying their economies or dismantling their cradle-to-grave welfare states. Nope - they'll hit the snooze button and hope that Uncle Sam comes to the rescue when the next NATO member is attacked. They are just Eloi being Eloi.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Putin starts casting an eye to Finland. The Russians haven’t forgotten their wars with the Finns. The Russians subdued them by sheer weight in 1939/40 but the Finns put up a hell of a good fight. And that Finland had been sympathetic to the Nazis and sent troops to Russia isn’t someday the Russkies have forgotten.

It’s no “theory” and I’ll let NATO speak for itself on the matter. The following is from it’s own official documentation ...

http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natolive/official_texts_17120.htm

And, in particular ...

Article 5

The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security.

It’s no “theory” and I’ll let NATO speak for itself on the matter. The following is from it’s own official documentation

Theory's what's on paper in the form of treaties and so on. Reality is what national leaders actually decide to do. This was the allied response to the invasion of Poland:

The Saar Offensive was a French attack into that region defended by the German 1st Army in the early stages of World War II. Its purpose was to assist Poland, which was then under attack. However, the assault was stopped after a few miles and the French forces withdrew.

According to the Franco-Polish military convention, the French Army was to start preparations for a major offensive three days after the beginning of mobilization. The French forces were to effectively gain control over the area between the French border and the German lines and were to probe the German defences. On the 15th day of the mobilisation (that is on 16 September), the French Army was to start a full-scale assault on Germany. The preemptive mobilisation was started in France on 26 August, and on 1 September full mobilisation was declared.

A French offensive in the Rhine river valley area (Saar Offensive) started on 7 September, four days after France declared war on Germany. Since the Wehrmacht was occupied in the attack on Poland, the French soldiers enjoyed a decisive numerical advantage along their border with Germany. However, the French took no meaningful action to assist the Poles. Eleven French divisions advanced along a 32 km (20 miles) line near Saarbrücken against weak German opposition. The attack did not result in the diversion of any German troops. The all-out assault was to have been carried out by roughly 40 divisions, including one armoured, three mechanised divisions, 78 artillery regiments and 40 tank battalions. The French Army had advanced to a depth of 8 km (5.0 miles) and captured about 20 villages evacuated by the German army, without any resistance. However, the half-hearted offensive was halted after France seized the Warndt Forest, 3 square miles (7.8 km2) of heavily mined German territory. On 12 September, the Anglo French Supreme War Council gathered for the first time at Abbeville. It was decided that all offensive actions were to be halted immediately as the French opted to fight a defensive war, forcing the Germans to come to them.

Treaties have been abrogated for as long as they've been set down on paper. The only defense treaty not subject to abrogation is one where the member countries become a single political entity.

I have a feeling that in the next few months, a place called Kaliningrad will be in the news. Kaliningrad Oblast (zone) is the only place where Russia borders Poland and Lithuania.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden sought to reassure the three ex-Soviet Baltic republics of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia that America will defend any NATO member against aggression.

They are doomed.

The French are still selling their Helicopter carriers to Russia. Germans have cancelled a battle training and simulation center.

My thoughts exactly. Nice bit of seacoast there in Kaliningrad Oblast.
