As far as I know he wasn’t in any real danger of losing the seat.

I don’t know any of the state reps from that district. I’d like to see our Attorney general and Secretary of state run in the future but we need them where they are for now.

More from the Washington post.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2014/03/28/rep-mike-rogers-to-retire-launch-national-radio-show/

>>”I have always believed in our founders’ idea of a citizen legislature,” he said in his statement. “I had a career before politics and always planned to have one after. The genius of our institutions is they are not dependent on the individual temporary occupants privileged to serve.”<<

Personally I don’t buy it. He had every intent of running a few months ago.

“Hune would have to give up his seat to run, however.”

Yeah, Hune’s Senate seat is up in 2014. But Hune might be willing to risk it, since (i) it would be his last term in the MI legislature anyhow (he already served 8 years in the state house and if reelected to the state senate in 2014 he’ll reach his two-term limit there as well), and (ii) if a Republican wins the MI-08 seat in November (which is the likeliest scenario, particularly since Democrat hottie Gretchen Whitmer almost certainly will pass up a run, as she has prior entreaties to go to Washington or even to run statewide), it may not open up again for a while, and Hune would then have to risk a statewide run if he wants to stay in elective office. Given that Hune first got elected to the state house at age 21 and has been in elective office ever since, I have to assume that he’s very ambitious and would be hard-pressed to pass up this opportunity, even if he has to face Valde Garcia or another top-tier Republican in the primary.

This is odd. Committee chair at 50 do not retire.

Corruption or a bimbo/bimboy eruption would be the most likely reasons. Something like steering contracts to his wife’s business interests or maybe he has an intern problem.

Politics1 at last check doesn’t have Garcia or Hune listed as potential candidates, but they did add these three names as speculative:

Mike Bishop (R) - Ex-State Senate Majority Leader, Ex-State Rep., Attorney & ‘12 Oakland County Prosecutor Nominee

Craig DeRoche (R) - Ex-State House Speaker, Ex-Novi City Councilman & Religious Right Activist

Barb Byrum (D) - Ingham County Clerk, Ex-State Rep. & Hardware Store Owner

Already running against Rogers are two desultory Dem candidates:

Ken Darga (D) - Retired State Demographer & Economist
Susan Grettenberger (D) - College Professor & Social Worker

Both Schuette and Johnson are terrific, but, as you said, they are needed in their current positions (and, besides, Schuette is from outside the MI-08). I can see Schuette running for the U.S. Senate in 2018 when his AG term is up (he’ll be 64 then). Ruth Johnson will be 63 in 2018; could she run for Governor?

A Livingston County candidate would have the advantage in the primary. And Novi isn’t in MI-08, is it?

Is Barb Byrum the sister of Diane, the Democrat whom Rogers barely beat in 2000?

I’m not sure which district Novi is in.

I heard that Barb Byrum is the daughter but I can’t be sure.

Novi is in the 11th (Bentivolio’s seat). Barb Byrum is Dianne’s daughter. She already served her 3 terms in the House and was termed out in 2013 (she almost lost reelection in 2010, but the Dems held her seat in 2012).

He had every intent of running a few months ago.

I received a standard plea for reelection campaign money from his office just this week. He wasn't aware that was being sent out? Very strange timing.

I don't see this seat as an easy win for anyone on the right. The primary is going to be a typical mid-Michigan melee, too many candidates and none of them with widespread name-recognition, and that's where the seat will be lost. The dems will keep their primary choices down to a trio, no matter how much strong-arming has to go on behind the scenes. Whitmer, Byrum...some screeching lefty broad, that's who I think is going to take this seat in the end. I've found myself less and less in agreement with Rogers as the years have gone by but I hate the idea that my Congressman is going to be some loonie lefty.

The seat was drawn for a Republican, and this will be a lousy year for the Dems, so no need to panic.

GRIFFIN: Want an example? Take Kristi Clemens Rogers.

Four years ago, she married the powerful chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Michigan Congressman Mike Rogers.

Up until 2012, she was also the CEO of the American branch of Aegis, a defense and security contracting firm, where. according to her new employer, the law firm, Manatt, Phelps and Phillips, Kristi Rogers successfully developed and led a two-year pursuit and capture strategy to win a five-year, $10 billion contract under the Department of State’s Worldwide Protective Services program.”

And, yes, it’s an area her husband’s committee has Congressional oversight, making sure diplomats and their staffs are properly protected.

You would think Congressman Mike Rogers would at least disclose that family connection, or that in appearing before Congress, Kristi Rogers would disclose her marital ties.

But on his Web site, Congressman Rogers only states he’s in fact married, no name, and Kristi Rogers in an appearance before a presidential commission back in 2010 didn’t mention the name of the man she just married, even though she missed her first appearance due to her honeymoon.

KRISTI CLEMENS ROGERS, WIFE OF REPRESENTATIVE MIKE ROGERS: It was an unfortunate perfect storm. I had just come off my honeymoon. That was not the perfect storm —

GRIFFIN: The congressman declined our interview request, and his press secretary set us straight in this email, telling us this is all old news.

“Kristi Rogers is not a lobbyist,” she writes, and “is not engaging in those activities.”

“She has also never met with any member of Congressman Rogers’ staff or staff members of the intelligence committee in any professional capacity on any issue.”

Kristi Rogers is now the managing director of Federal Government Affairs and Public Policy from Manatt, Phelps & Phillips.

She is not a registered lobbyist. She just happens to work for a firm that does extensive lobbying, and on its Web site, touts its “strong relationships in Congress” with a “solid record of success in securing legislation and federal funding on behalf of clients.” NYHART: And it’s this kind of conflict of interest that leads to this deep distrust.

GRIFFIN: What we are told constantly by the members is, I never talk to my spouse about this issue.

I never talk to her on this business. There’s a firewall between me and my sons who are lobbyists.

Do you buy that?

NYHART: Well, whether you buy it or not, here’s the question of the appearance. I’m sure there’s some reality.

I can’t quite believe that members of Congress don’t care about the fortunes of their family members.

GRIFFIN: And the fortunes go both ways. Mike Rogers’ wife, Kristi becomes CEO of defense contractor, then is hired by a lobbying firm.

Rogers becomes chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, and according to the Federal Election Commission, political donations from the defense industry quadruple, all legal, all within the rules, all routine in the family business of Washington.

Drew Griffin, CNN, Washington.
