Moviegoers Are Thinking Things Over After Earthquake Hits During 'Noah'
The Wire ^ | 3/29/14 | Adam Chandler

No major injuries were reported after a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck near Los Angeles last night. Beyond word of property damage, power outages, and general anxiety—there were dozens of reported aftershocks—moviegoers, especially those who saw the biblically-themed "Noah," were a little shaken up.

Moviegoers were especially shaken up while abandoning theaters only to find broken water mains spurting water thousands of feet up into the air.

IMHO, perhaps among the best person at putting together a Bible movie was Cecil B. Demille in putting together The Ten Commandments, FWIW, he wasn’t even scared to have a person do the voice of God, or portray God as the great pillar of fire either. Nowadays, god seems so absent from a lot of Bible movies that they honestly are neutered.

Will somebody tell me why movies have become the most important precursor or predictor of today’s world? I am completely baffled why somebody watching a fictional story (albiet possibly true in some small respects compared to the Bible) is completely ensured that this is ??. The movie is FICTIONALIZED. The same happens with other movies. An event happens and immediatly people start relating it to some movie. Maybe Godzilla is true. Maybe the War of the Worlds is true. Maybe Of Mice and Men is true. Maybe ??? is true. Please enlighten this old man. Thank you.

What a dumb statement. What was he telling them in 1906? That “hemlines” were getting too short on women’s skirts?

A 5.1 earthquake in Southern California is a non-event. The TV newspeople had to drive all over Southern California just to find some broken dishes and bottles.

If this earthquake had hit in some third world hell hole, thousands of people would be buried under their mud huts.

Just about every building in Southern California is built to withstand a quake 200 times as strong as that little 5.1 yawner we had last night.

You’re saying SoCal can withstand about a 7.4?

You’re saying SoCal can withstand about a 7.4?

We had one a few years ago in Landers, which is a desert community. One person was killed when the brick chiminey fell on him while he was sleeping near the fireplace.

The California building codes are the toughest in the nation and most homes that are built are wood frame stucco houses built on concrete foundations. They can withstand a 10.0. They did an experiment on Mythbusters to try to simulate a 10.0 on a typical wood frame stucco house and they couldn't bring it down.

I would be much more afraid of tornadoes than earthquakes. More people are killed every year in tornadoes than all the people killed in earthquakes since the 1906 San Fransisco earthquake. And with today's building codes and retrofitting of old buildings, that same quake today would likely only do minor damage and less people would be killed that if an F5 tornado blew through a small town in Oklahoma.

Although our homes can withstand a 8.0 earthquake or higher they would not survive an F4 tornado.

Had an F1 cut across our property a few years back. It didn’t just knock trees over. It ripped them out by the roots. We’re talking 60-90 foot ash, pine, and walnut.

The director is brilliantly lucky. The conservatives have singlehandedly caused this film to become a hit. It will make 45-50 million this weekend and it would have only made LESS than 10 million had conservatives kept their big mouths shut. He owes conservatives for the success of the movie. Talk about free marketing. He could not have had a better situation. God is clearly looking after the Director (even though he doesn’t believe in him).
