Potential leads on the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 keep coming. So do the setbacks and frustrations.
Monday's search ended without finding anything significant, Australian officials said. Four orange objects spotted by search aircraft and earlier described as promising turned out be nothing more than old fishing gear, they said.
Underscoring the difficulty of the search, U.S. Navy officials loaded underwater locating gear aboard an Australian naval support vessel and set out to sea Monday evening, but won't be able to make use of the equipment until searchers narrow the search zone.
U.S. Navy Cmdr. William Marks told CNN's "State of the Union" that his team needs a conclusive piece of debris to narrow down the search area before deploying the equipment.
"We have to be careful not to send it in the wrong place," he said. "But we also wanted to get it out there as close as we can to what we believe is the right place."
The gear includes a pinger locator that's towed behind a ship and scans for the sound of the locator beacon attached to the plane's flight data recorder. Also on board is a remotely operated submersible that can look for wreckage on the ocean floor.
It will take the ship, the Ocean Shield, three days just to get to the search zone, leaving precious little time to locate the plane's flight data recorders before the batteries on its locator beacon run out. The batteries are designed to last 30 days; the plane has been missing 23 days.
Under favorable sea conditions, the pingers can be heard 2 nautical miles away. But high seas, background noise, wreckage or silt can all make pingers harder to detect.
In this case, searchers barely know where to look at all.

The searchers are operating under the assumption that the plane flew until it ran out of fuel. That assumption may not be true.
Knowing what we now know about the pilot and the way the plane was diverted, the pilot may not have wanted to die in the crash.
If they are not now they may soon be checking those friendlier waters closer to Indonesia south of West Java.
DB Cooper stole it.
Sarah, I cannot give the families hope. I know not what happened but the Indian route is beginning to not pan out is all can say. If something in there in the Indian Ocean, may that something be found soon. Prayers for the families of those onboard the flight.
RE: The Malaysian Govt might have shot this plane down.
OK, next question -— IF SO, FOR WHAT REASON?
If DB was onboard wouldn’t we know by now, one has to ask? Well, maybe not with all the media being baffled and nearly never correct. At least the media has a track record of being 99.999% incorrect so one has to assume the media’s track record is intact, one supposes.
It was a plane that had no transponder or ACARS, the Govt might have believed that this plane was up to no good, you see a plane with no detector on it, you might think its a threat to your country
The problem I see with the someone wanted a plane to fly on an ongoing basis is that planes need service at regular intervals. Practically ever single part of an airplane has a serial number and that is going to make things more difficult.
If we are talking about using it as a delivery system, why go to the hassle of stealing a plane full of people?
I still go with it was taken for the hostages or for what they knew.
If there is even the slightest hope that these passengers are still alive I will believe that anything is possible. I pray that they are still alive, even if it is only a 1 percent chance its better than nothing
Amen Sarah ... 1% is 1% ... but I have no idea.
It does look like it is only 50/50 for the southern route. If was the southern route, may something be found soon.
This is beyond pathetic. Those poor families are suffering mental cruelty, I hope they sue anyone and everyone. Oh look, there’s debris over here, no wait, it’s over there, no wait look, it’s out there, there’s no proof that the damn plane went down in the ocean, I wish they’d just shut the hell up until they are absolutely sure and can prove it, I don’t believe a word of what they say......seeing is believing....call me when you’re pulling the plane out of the ocean, then and only then will I believe it. Until then, I’m guessing the plane is in a hangar somewhere being remodeled.
CNN has been positively orgasmic in it’s coverage.
I especially like the hysterical British guy.
.
It’s engines were pinging for 6 hours after it left Malaysian airspace. They didn’t shoot it down.
They are basing everything on INMARSAT but its relatively new technology could be wrong..I heard that if a plane goes on the outer banks of India that there is no signal and they could easily get by..Pakistan they wouldn’t be able to without having approval of the Govt
This headline should say:
“Malaysian 777 repainted. Seats removed. Filled will _______ for unexpected attack on Tel Aviv.”
That ___________ might be dirty radioactive material. Or, it might be a nuclear device. Or Newt’s favorite, an EMP.
And ‘Tel Aviv’ might be ‘New York’ or ‘Miami.’
Strange things happen when you put a con artist with forged ID and seven (7) SSNs in charge of the largest military on earth.
Yeah that Richard Quest is quite the character..of course he’s enjoying this..otherwise what would he be doing right now, sitting at home scratching himself..this is the most fun he has had in decades..they also have Mary Schiavo, they might as well be playing “Send In the Clowns” when they appear
Every time I read these “breaking stories” I hear the old Zombies tune “She’s Not There”...
Well if that information is anything like the “Alright Good night” nonsense we have been fed for weeks who knows, maybe the 6 hour ping story isnt true either. At this point, I take everything with a grain of salt, especially if it came from the Malaysian Govt
It does look like a case of so many possibilities being nothing has been found. I keep praying for closure for these families but God appears to have other ideas.
