My Little Pony, 50 Years Later
nytimes.com ^ | April 4, 2014

When the Ford Mustang was introduced 50 years ago this month, it was first to break from the gate in a market class that would come to be known as pony cars.

With a long hood and a short rear deck — proportions carried forward by the Chevrolet Camaro, Plymouth Barracuda and many others — the Mustang looked ready to bolt. And bolt it did, as 22,000 wowed Americans placed orders for the car on April 17, according to Ford, the official first day of sales.

Naming the car for a horse proved to be a stroke of marketing genius. Not just any horse, mind you (a car named Clydesdale might never have been so popular) but one that conjured images of rugged wild horses roaming the American West: The drama that imagery invoked was supported by the car’s fresh style and a galloping steed front and center in the grille.

Underneath, the Mustang was essentially Ford’s Falcon, a solid compact that was available with V8 power and a 4-speed manual transmission. Those underpinnings were enough to get the pony car sales competition off to a fast start.

never a pony guy....mostly a muscle car guy. Mopar. I had a 67 Plymouth Satellite I bought new in fall off 66. It was my Richard Petty car. I should never have sold it.

for any interested I have a VERY rough 67 Mustang under a tarp in my back yard, with title. $1000 takes her.(did I mention it was ROUGH)

my latest project car is a 71 cutlass supreme 350cuin. it has less than 6000 original miles.(this is the wifes grandfathers car...it is NOT for sale but a trade for a cherry 67 satellite is possible)

and my oldest boy just bought a 77 Dodge aspen 318 that is being seen this year in the show ‘The Americans’. the guy who rents them to the studio decided to sell this one....

My dad bought one in ‘66. My mother was embarrassed. He claimed he bought it after the ‘67’s came out and they gave him a truly great deal. It was white with red interior

I had a colleague that bought a Mustang convertible ‘65 I think....... with A/C that cost extra. It was white with red interior.

I always wondered why would you buy a convertible and air conditioning?

I bought a VW and a used TR 4

My very first car was a VW bug. I didn’t know how to drive a stick but bought it anyway. My brother taught me to drive it. He had to drive it home for me. I was 19. I then bought a brand new Camaro. It was the coolest car ever. Silver with a black vinyl top. I eventually bought two more Camaros.

Can’t remember the engine size but it was fast. Never got a speeding ticket, though. My brother got it up to 112. We were crazy. LOL

“Mr. Glazier traded in his ’54 Corvette...
Mr. Glazier’s Mustang is a Rangoon Red coupe with a 260-cubic-inch V8 and 3-speed manual transmission. He drove it for 15 years, stored it for 26 years and did a complete restoration in 2006.

So was this a smart decision? Given that both had been maintained, which would probably bring a higher price at auction?

I would have loved to have a Corvette. IMHO, they are the coolest cars ever. I rode in one once. It was awesome. I still stare at them when I see them on the road. Mostly old guys driving them. LOL A dream come true, I guess.

Funny, I was not impressed with my ride in a ‘vette. But my 5th grade teacher drove a candy-apple blue mustang, and we all thought she was the coolest thing ever.

I’ve had 26 cars over the course of my life (53 now) ranging from absolute junk to some very nice wheels.

My favorite of all of them is a tie between two:

1967 Mustang GT 390 (OMG!) and 1971 Mustang Mach One (351 Cleveland, worked)

The 390 was a beast. That motor was unbelievably powerful for that light car. Miss it.

The Mach One was heavier, and very fast as well, but the 390 was a killer.

Also had a 1968 Mustang GT which I never got on the road, and parted out when the kids were born.

My FIRST car (after I wrecked the family Plymouth Valiant) was a 1969 Chevelle SS convertible, with 396 in it.

Miss the muscle car days.

But - that being said - I love what Dodge did with the Challenger and Charger, and the new retro Mustangs are beautiful.

Funny how we can get so attached to cars. And how we change after we have kids. I remember after mine were born sitting at a red light and admiring a station wagon. LOL I remember thinking “what is wrong with me???”

My best friend had a Firebird and I had the Camaro. The good old days when gas mileage was the last thing on our minds.

I had to put hollow blocks in my trunk to keep the rear end down ... (350 oh cam) .. I just sat on the line tearin' up rubber.

I didn't know about that trick until a 'maro beat me off the line.

My boyfriend at the time actually raced my car a couple of times. I think he liked my car more than he liked me.

Mustangs are very cool! I had an old 69 once and currently own an 02 with a 3.8 V6. I love the Stang, a classic American car!
