Changing N.H. demographics may help Scott Brown
The Boston Globe ^ | April 13, 2014 | Michael Levinson

DERRY, N.H. — Democrats have called Scott Brown a carpetbagger and suggested the former Massachusetts senator is going to stick out in New Hampshire like a flamingo in the White Mountains. But the unusual demographics of this state might blunt that attack and help Brown resurrect his political fortunes on fresh territory.

Contrary to the popular stereotype of the New Hampshire voter as a flinty, 10th-generation farmer who traces his roots to a soldier in the Continental Army, about two-thirds of New Hampshire adults were born in another state — and a quarter of them were born in Massachusetts.

Even in an era of mobility, New Hampshire stands out for its abundance of transplants: Only six states have a smaller proportion of native-born residents, according to Kenneth M. Johnson, the senior demographer at the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire.

This influx of residents is one reason Republicans feel hopeful about Brown’s ability to shake off the interloper label.

Over the last five decades, New Hampshire, once a bastion of old-line Yankee Republicans, has turned more Democratic. But the politically potent southern part of the state has become more conservative as it has filled with residents fleeing Massachusetts in search of less expensive housing, lower taxes, and a more libertarian ethos.

I would love to hear from Hampshiremen amnd women) on tis article. It goes against what I heard about the "Massholes" turning the state blue. Does anyone out there know what happened to the old New Hampshirites who apparently are being displaced? There does not seem to be any real growth so they must be going some where.

Carpetbagger doesn’t mean the same in Yankee land as it does down South. Just look at New York and Hitlery.

“with residents fleeing Massachusetts...” That has happened when they relocate to places in the south yet some of the dopes forget to leave their politics behind. Seems they truly think “Democrats are for the little guy, the average worker” as one person recently said to me.

Its his revenge on Elizabeth Warren. He stands a good chance of winning because New Hampshire’s demographics differ from those in Massachusetts. And his opposition to Obamacare plays well with New Hampshirites.

I live in one of the two southern New Hampshire counties mentioned in this article.

My town is Republican by a margin of more than two to one, and it is not unusual for the region. Most people who came here from Massachusetts (including me, 17 years ago) consider ourselves political and tax refugees, not proselytizers for the Liberal faith.

We are largely conservative and libertarian in outlook, and have struggled to maintain New Hampshire as the last firewall in the increasingly "blue" Northeast.

The Progressives who have come here more frequently decamped from states like New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and California - wealthy liberals who liked their vacation homes and decided to stay, bringing their political views with them.

Our present left-wing Senator Jeanne Shaheen is not from NH, but from Missouri. Nearly all of her campaign money comes from out of state. And yet, I don't recall people calling her a "carpetbagger"...

For his part, at least Scott Brown was born in New Hampshire. He's considerably more liberal than I would like on some issues, and that troubles me, except that Shaheen is so much worse and a GOP victory would move Republicans that much closer to recapturing the Senate, and kicking Harry Reid out.

A few years ago, a coworker told me that people who live in southern NH commute into Mass. for work.

They live in NH because of the high taxes in Mass.

Probably Liberals who are champions of higher taxes and at the same avoid taxes by moving outside of the high tax area that they created. Your usual Liberal hypocrite.

They flee the state that they destroyed and bring their same beliefs to the new state and the new state eventually the new state is no better, It happened that way here in Colorado.

There was a study once that debunked the theory that Massachusetts transplants were turning the state blue.

What they found out is that most new residents via Mass were voting Republican. (NH is still more Republican than Democrat.)

What they claimeded is that the University System has exploded over the years - bringing in loads of liberal voting professors, administrators and students.

Correct. NH conservatives can elect someone who will vote with them 80 percent of the time, or they re-elect someone who votes with them zero percent of the time- and will keep Reid as majority leader to boot.

Easy decision from my perspective.

I am also a political refugee from the People’s Republic of Massachusetts (Class of 86).

I think you appraisal is accurate. Scott Brow definitely falls under the category of the lesser of two evils. I will not vote for him in the Republican primary, I’ll vote for a conservative instead (what happened to Ovide Lamontagne?). But if he is the Republican nominee, I’d vote for him in a heart-beat over Jean (the spending-machine) Shaheen.

FYI, as someone who has lived in NH for many years while working in MA. NH residents working in MA pay MA income taxes while paying the high property taxes of NH (which has no income tax). My situation was the worst of both worlds from a tax standpoint (although I saved a bunch on car insurance), but I thought it was worth of from a quality of life perspective (great place to raise kids).

NH has unfortunately shifted to the left since I moved here in ‘86, but I am sincerely hoping the the pendulum is swinging back. I’d like to live once again on conservative high-ground that will, I’m afraid, always be surrounded by the miasma of the other socialist states in the NE.

They moved. They are being replaced rapidly by M*ssholes (spit!) and New Yorkers (double spit)...a foul-mouthed breed of filth. (Don't be 'thin-skinned'...there are exceptions to most broad-brushed statements.)

Some of the M*ss imports are conservatives fleeing communism (accounting for the red counties in NH just over the border from Assachusetts), but the NY'ers are far worse than most of the Mass refugees.

John Sununu (Junior?) stated recently that more people are fleeing Red Hampshire than moving in for the first time in forty years. My deadline for getting the hell out of this state is the end of October. "Give me liberty", and all that.

Then there are the 'Free Staters'...

what happened to Ovide Lamontagne?

Taken out by a whisker in the GOP Senate primary by Kelly Ayotte...Lamontagne had the endorsement of Jim DeMint; Ayotte was the fave of one Sarah Palin. We all make mistakes, don't we, Sarah?
