U.S. Supreme Court upholds Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld Michigan's controversial ban on affirmative action in public college admissions in a divided opinion released Tuesday morning, preserving a status quo that's contributed to dwindling minority enrollment at the state's flagship colleges.

The high court's decision is a blow to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, which has come under fire for low minority enrollment.

Blacks comprise just 4.6 percent of undergraduates this year, compared to 8.9 percent in 1995 and 7 percent in 2006.

University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman and admissions director Ted Spencer have decried the affirmative action ban, saying outright that the school cannot achieve a fully diverse student body with it in place.

"It's impossible," Spencer said in a recent interview, "to achieve diversity on a regular basis if race cannot be used as one of many factors."

Fifty-eight percent of Michigan voters in 2006 passed Proposal 2, a ballot initiative that amended the state constitution and made it illegal for state entities to consider race in admissions and hiring. With the Supreme Court's ruling, the only way left to nullify Proposal 2 is to mount a long, expensive and uncertain campaign to overturn it.

So, if there are blacks who graduate and can’t write, or even speak English, then everyone’s happy!

I would say that what contributes to a dwindling supply of black students in these schools is the bigotry of low expectations.

Interestingly enough, the public/charter Ben Carson school of science and medicine in Detroit demands academic excellence as a primary requirement to get in the door.

Without affirmative action, where will the Racist Studies program, or the Gay/Lesbian Studies programs get their students?

Kids might want to study Engineering, or something, instead, and that simply cannot be allowed.

They psychos who are in charge at Michigan are shouting "DIE-VERSITY"

Remember everyone, diversity = perversity!

Judging people not by the content of their character, but by the color of their skin.

I have been wondering about why Whites are racists and no other race is......

Well, we’ll soon find out when Leonard Pitts pens his next column. (Do I really need the tag?)

Note the lack of statistics about the percentage of blacks among those who receive degrees.

“BE PROUD TO BE WHITE!”

I am not “proud” to be white (or any race), but I won’t be ashamed or give deference to any race.

The University of Michigan is saying ‘we think that the only thing that matters is how many in a certain skin color group graduate each year.’

Careful. They’re not talking about graduating. AA black admittees drop out at far higher rates. They hide the graduation stats, and focus on percentage of the entering class.

"It's impossible," Spencer said in a recent interview, "to achieve diversity on a regular basis if race cannot be used as one of many factors."

Here's a novel idea: How about educating "minorities" in grades K-12 so there are able to compete with all wannabe college students for admission to the college of their choice. If the "minorities" Spencer covets so dearly to attend the university are not academically qualified, place the blame where it is deserved - the democrat party (no teachers' union accountability, no inner city personal responsibility, government dependence-caused unwed mothers raising children without the father, etc., etc., etc.)

Divided opinion? It wasn't unanimous, but it was overwhelming - 6 to 2!!!!

The unwise Latina wrote the LOSING opinion. The screed went on for more pages than the four majority opinions combined.

Unwise Latina was joined by Ruth Buzzi Ginsburg.

From Scalia's opening:

"It has come to this. Called upon to explore the jurisprudential twilight zone between two errant lines of precedent, we confront a frighteningly bizarre question: Does the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment forbid what its text plainly requires?"

They should be fired because, being employed at a state school they are agents of the state. Lashing out like this undermines the authority and perogatives of the state, and of the people (58% of whom supported this amendment).

At this point their role is to salute and implement the decision.

What is “impossible” is to admit that the primary education system in the state has failed and will continue to fail.

Add to that the cultural divided that has been the core of the Democratic Party since the mid-1960s and minorities in the Republic are in for a rough time.

But, I have a simple, and historic, solution for this issue. Michigan needs to adopt the educational polices practiced by the service academies roughly 100 years ago and are, to a lesser degree, still in practice today.

The service academies knew/know that all too many of their incoming classes aren’t ready. One hundred years ago the deficiencies were primarily academic. Today they are primarily social. So, the service academies have orientation classes to make good those shortfalls.

A course of two or three semesters of academics ONLY would offer the undereducated/uneducated minorities a chance to redress their shortfalls. Yes, they would be older than those who came directly out of high school; but, they would be able to keep up in class and graduate which is more important.

Yes, these prep schools would have some ugly failure rates. But, since when has education been a losing proposition?

One final thought, the colleges already do this for a minor issue called football; why can’t they do it for a major issue like education?

It’s just about the numbers, not real achievement. If we just put window dressing in the window, you don’t need real learning to occur.

Is it really the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor which deserves the wrath for low minority enrollment? What about Michigan’s government HS and the teachers and administrators there? How about the grade school, the welfare system in Michigan or even the parents?

The blame game is an intentional lie.

This case has ramifications and portends the success of gay marriage amendments in states banning them. LIKE CALIFORNIA !! This is great!! Affirmative action bans will now sweep the country, at last. I don’t read the amendment to state constitution as dis positive at all. When the people speak at the ballot box — It cannot be overturned by a federal law from this day forward. AWESOME. Majority rules!~!

Meanwhile, at U-M the Black Student Union and other student groups have condemned low minority enrollment at the school and demanded 10 percent black representation on campus. The demand is a leap from the existing 4.6 percent black enrollment, but it is in line with promises the university made to black students in the 1970s.

Define "black". Define "minority". Define "diversity". Then, define "achievement".
