A CSX train carrying crude oil derailed Wednesday afternoon by the James River in downtown Lynchburg, sparking a massive fire that sent a thick column of black smoke high into the sky.

Officials said 12 to 14 tanker cars were involved, but what caused the derailment is unclear. Three or four of the cars were breached, spilling oil into the river. Hazardous-materials crews are on scene.

The incident happened shortly before 2 p.m. near Ninth and Jefferson streets.

City firefighters are allowing the fire to burn out, and it has abated somewhat since the derailment.

Multiple off-duty city buses have arrived on scene to help people leave the scene. Officials are asking people to stay away from the area.

No injuries have been reported so far, but a Centra Health spokeswoman said shortly before 3 p.m. that the hospital system has staff standing by just in case.

The fire department is now allowing the fire to burn out after accessing the situation.

That is real wisdom from a local fire department. If they don’t have regular hazmat/petrochem type training, just keep it from spreading.

The tracks skirt the James River on the edge of downtown, near several businesses and an old shoe manufacturing company that has been converted into apartments. Officer Paul Cole of the Lynchburg Police Department said those shops and the apartment complex were evacuated as a precaution. The courthouse also was closed, though Cole said it is four blocks from the accident scene at 10th and Commerce streets.

The derailment occurred between about 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., Svrcek said. Fire crews are on the scene. Jefferson St. and Commerce St. are closed in the downtown area, as are a pair of bridges to adjacent Amherst County, Svrcek said. The cause of the crash remains unknown, she said.

Lynchburg is a city of about 75,000 people, more than 100 miles west of Richmond. It’s also where Liberty University is located.

First people on my list to check out would be the environazis, they don't care how much carnage they cause in the name of gaia.

I agree...It also looks to be in a difficult place to access it, the tank cars look like they’d be between them and the fire.

Were you about to post this article from the Daily News, looks like you were prepared.
