What I’m saying is that the military has to have EMP protection, no matter the risk. Civilians not so much, so they have to improvise.
Batteries can be replaced, and unfortunately so can personnel..................I knew I was a target. The 10 foot antenna didn’t help hide me much....................
Thanks for the tip.
That didn’t even make sense, it was rambling.
Your original post was wrong, EMP damage is something that happens, and can happen without anyone dying, it is not a case of ‘we’ll all be dead anyway, so why bother’.
So, in summary: There is no such thing as EMP; The EMP will not kill our electronics; and I am so screwed.
All one needs to do is sleep in one's microwave oven at night... and hope someone doesn't come along and hit the "reheat" button.
I never said EMP damage can’t happen. I know it does and can without killing people, at least immediately. EMP is something that the military HAS to deal with. I deal with it in my line of work. .....................
Defrost...............190 lbs...................
Cheap and effective. But all my trash cans are plastic....................
Cheap and effective. But all my trash cans are plastic....................
Sorry, I got off on a wrong track.
It was post 8 that threw me off, I misinterpreted it, I guess that I missed your earlier two posts.
In regards to post 8 though, I think that preparing for EMPs, within reason, is a priority for dealing with whatever emergency period would follow.
A person who is prepared to deal without a power grid, is well on his way to living relatively normal in an emergency.
As long as I have light for reading, working in the evening, and for security and searching, and some music, and radios, I would be fairly comfortable.
My daughter and son-in-law are preppers. They have solar electric panels for emergency and lots of ammo for contingencies.
I live next to Eglin AFB, so WTSHTF, I’ll probably be a radioactive ash pile.....................
I don’t think that you realize that the EMP discussion and a major nuclear war, are two different things.
Oh yes, I know, but the likelihood of having one without the other is slim. Once that line has been crossed, all bets are off the table................
“Get an old microwave and put susceptible items in it. Get several if necessary. The older ones are larger though..................”
Doesn’t work. A microwave is very good at attenuating 2.4GHz signals (the frequency of the microwave itself) but not as good at other frequencies.
Proof: Put a small portable FM radio tuned to a local station inside and close the door. You’ll still hear it, proving that there is not enough shielding to protect stuff from an EMP. It WILL cut off more distant stations, but that isn’t nearly enough.
“First you need to understand that EMP is more hype than fact in the it is going to kill all your electronics”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverse-square_law"
The inverse square law does not apply to an EMP because the radiating RF area is the atmosphere layer 20km up when gamma rays hit it.
SO technically it is a “near field” phenomena - and the inverse square law does not apply in the near field.
“Inverse Square Law means that the EMP event must be relatively close to you so that your electronics would be the last thing you would have to worry about”
Incorrect.
No, it isn’t slim at all and that is what you keep stubbornly missing.
A EMP device can be set off by a weak and tiny country, without any ability to take out America’s military bases in a total global thermonuclear war.
“The microwave will work as a Faraday cage ONLY IF: “
The microwave will never work.
Protect the charge controller and the inverter.
“I have read many articles on the subject and it appears that if you have all of your electronics unplugged and turned off most will survive an EMP.”
Those articles are mostly wrong. It’s impossible to predict what will and will not be damaged - though stuff plugged in will be more vulnerable.
