“How do you “Ground your car”?”

Just put some garlic in the glove box. It won’t help with an EMP, but it WILL keep vampires out.

“.......or you could just ground the chassis to a ground rod yourself without the house wiring even being necessary..................”

But it won’t work.

“An ordinary old galvanized steel trash can does the job at a very low cost per cubic foot. 55 gallon drum is good, too.”

One mod....get a roll of steel wool, put it around the lip then put the lid on. It will give you very close to MIL-SPec performance. I’ve tested it myself.

“Just hang a piece of chain from the bumper to the ground is what I read.”

That won’t work.

“Again, there is no one who knows more about EMPs and damage than these two men - I believe what they say as they have lived it. Faraday cages are not necessary, but go ahead and build one if it makes you happy. “

I know more about them then the two men who supposedly work for the defense department.

THeir information is erroneous. Sorry.

“These two men worked in secret due to the importance of their mission to protect our weapons systems”

We’ve been protecting our weapons systems against EMP for a lot longer than they are telling you. General EMP effects are not classified, and have not been for a long time.

“Evidently for something to be affected by EMP not everyone has to die.”

You are correct. Nobody will die from the blast of a nuclear detonation even as low as 50km in the atmosphere.

“I am so screwed.”

Yes, you’re screwed. What does an EMP have to do with it?

I realize that NK or Iran could possibly plan such an attack, but carrying one out is a totally different thing. I doubt that they would have the network in place to achieve such a lofty goal. Iran would be more likely to try and carry one out.

If some enemy wanted to attack the US, the first thing to go would be the satellites...................

“How so?...................”

An EMP doesn’t come directly from the nuclear detonation. If it did the inverse square law would likely apply.

The EMP comes from gamma rays interacting with the atmosphere about 20km above the ground.

So a nuclear detonation 400km above the earth would send gamma rays downward that then hit the layer of atmosphere 20km up - through the physical phenomenon known as compton scattering - gamma ray energy is converted to RF energy in that layer of the atmosphere. That layer will be thousands of miles around the nuclear detonation.

You are effectively 20km away from a 5000km diameter antenna

The inverse square law does not apply in this region (Near Field) because you are too close - energy comes from every direction - not from a plane wave expanding around a point source. You would have to be at least 5000km away for the inverse square law to start to apply.

That’s the main reason why it’s an issue.

If you are talking about directed energy EMP weapons that are on a truck - the inverse square law will apply - because the antenna is relatively small.

“SOS pads?.................”

No...get a roll from Lowes of 00 stainless steel. If you unwrap it carefully it will come out in a strip about 3 inches wide.

If the Massive Solar Flare of 1859 (the "Carrington Flare") Happened Today...

More seriously, the solar storm battered the world's infant communication network. Telegraph wires burst into flames, touching off fires (while in other cases fire crews were called to fires that did not exist, due to the fiery lights in the sky). Telegraph machines scorched paper printouts, stunned operators with electric shocks, transmitted gibberish, and continued working for hours even after being unplugged from the batteries that powered them. The Earth itself was no longer "grounded"!

That’s good. You probably wouldn’t fit inside a microwave.
