SYRACUSE, N.Y. - New York state taxpayers are funding the retirement pensions for more than 100 private employees of groups that lobby Albany on behalf of local governments even though they are not public employees.
The state is already paying for the retirement of 65 employees who counted one of the following nonprofits as their employers: New York State Conference of Mayors, New York State School Boards Association, New York State Association of Counties and the New York State Association of Towns.
Sen. George Maziarz, R-Newfane, and Assemblyman Sean Ryan, D-Buffalo, have introduced bills in each house this spring to stop the practice.
"Taxpayers have been footing the bill for these lobbyists' pensions for too long and it has to stop now," Maziarz said.
Maziarz and Ryan introduced two bills. The first would prohibit any new employees of the groups from participating in the state retirement system. The second would stop current employees from earning additional retirement benefits. They are not trying to take away past benefits.
New York state has allowed these specific groups to be members of the pension fund, although other nonprofits were banned in 1968. The groups were grandfathered in when the law was changed that year to keep nonprofits out, according to a spokesman for Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, who oversees the fund.

This will go no where, both these idiots need to go. The political pandering this election year is sickening.
The State of New York: It is to laugh...
What a bad joke. The taxpayers of New York are fools, apparently.
It is time to get the hell out of this state. Let it die broke. I’ve paid enough.
What about the janitors at the private firm? Aren’t they eligible, too?
ILLEGAL!
Conflict of interest!
Yes! Pay out the a$$ and never see the sun—what’s not to love?
