BEIRUT (Reuters) - Rebels detonated 60 tonnes of explosives packed underneath a large Syrian army base, blowing a hillside hundreds of meters (yards) into the air, an insurgent in the operation who provided footage of the attack said on Thursday.

The casualty toll from the blast was not immediately known.

An Islamic Front commander said that his brigade dug a 850-metre (2,800-foot) tunnel underneath Wadi al-Deif base, which is surrounded by rebels but has remained inside government control for the entirety of the three-year-long civil war.

Dear Pres. Assad,

Your intelligence service sucks if it can’t spot this kind of thing coming.

Sincerely,
Ben

Reminds me of the Battle of the Crater during the Petersburg siege.

Interesting. I’d never heard of the Battle of The Crater Bomb. I’ve been to Gettysburg twice, and hope someday to visit some of the other battlegrounds.

The Battle of the Crater was to break the trench warfare siege of Petersburg. The idea was to explode a massive bomb under the confederate lines immediately followed by an infantry rush during the confusion.

Has it happened an all black batallion was to lead the assault. But instead of going around the massive crater they first went in and got trapped in the cauldron when confederates recovered and flooded the crater with shot and mortar. It turned into a debacle and the confederates gave the black soldiers no quarter.

Makes me think of the scene in the Russian movie “Brest Fortress” where the Germans dropped a two-ton bomb on the fortress, that sunk into the ground before detonating.

The same thing happened in Vicksburg on June 25, 1863, except for it was white troops who rushed into the crater.

Saw it in the 60s. The crater was considerably eroded 100 years after the fact. Can only imagine what it looks like now.

The attack is good example of how a great idea can be execrably implemented and executed.

The Brits did something similar in WWI

That is interesting. The history of war is something that men have studied over the centuries. My husband and I have always had a particular interest in the Civil War.
