BERLIN--A close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin praised German diplomacy on Thursday while railing against the U.S. in the latest effort by Moscow to highlight western divisions over the Ukraine crisis.
Vladimir Yakunin, president of the Russian Railways and one of the Russian officials on the U.S. sanctions list, lavished praise on Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Germany's foreign minister, who visited Ukraine this week to endorse the government's planned dialogue with its critics at home.
"I know Mr. Steinmeier a little bit myself. I know he is very balanced and a very objective politician," Mr. Yakunin told reporters. "To my mind, Mr. Steinmeier can be the person who can create a bridge between the people of the eastern part of Ukraine and the western part of Ukraine."
The world, he said, must decide whether it wants "to seek political understanding and agreement or follow the piper's melodies--and that is the piper of the U.S.A." Children of friends in the U.S., he said, had been attacked because of their parents' connection to him.
Mr. Yakunin, who jokingly said he was "regarded as an enemy of the U.S.," ridiculed western sanctions against Russia as having "nothing to do with real attempts to sanction [the] economy. This is pure propaganda, this is pure political steps."
"Global capitalism," he said, not U.S. President Barack Obama, was the driving force behind the crisis in Ukraine and calls for tougher sanctions against Russia. "I am positive that Mr. Obama doesn't want any deterioration of the situation. He isn't the shark. I am positive about it."
Since the Ukraine crisis erupted earlier this year with the Russian invasion and subsequent annexation of Crimea, Moscow has sought to drive a wedge in the Western camp by co-opting misgivings among German business and voters about a confrontation with Russia.
