This Family Thought Obamacare Was ‘the Answer’… Until They Found Out Their Plan ‘Doesn’t Even Work’

Nick and Rachel Robinson were excited about the possibilities that Obamacare offered them when they found out they were expecting a third child.

“It’s one of those times where you hear the news and there’s this immediate sense of joy and excitement like, ‘Yay, a new kid. That’s awesome!’” Nick Robinson told NPR. But the happy news also came with a new set of worries. “What are we going to do? How are we going to pay for this? This is intense.”

When the option of the Affordable Care Act became available, the Robinsons believed it was the answer to what they were looking for. Nick’s company didn’t offer health benefits and neither did Rachel’s position as a wedding photographer.

“I was like, ‘Oh, here’s the answer! This is simple!’” he told NPR. “‘It’s a cheaper insurance plan, there’s no pre-existing condition stuff.’”

But the Robinsons soon learned the HMO Blue Cross Blue Shield plan they pay about $375 each month for wasn’t quite what they expected.

For example, when it came to finding an obstetrician in Texas for their upcoming baby earlier this year, Rachel said she called all 28 practices listed as acceptable options for their plan, but could find none to take her as a patient.

“Some would just come right out and say, ‘We don’t take Obamacare,’” she said. ”Or the best one was, ‘The doctor takes it here at the actual practice, but whatever hospital you use … does not take that insurance.’”

NPR noted that there were practices that accepted HMO plans, but the doctors rotated and Rachel wanted a relationship with only one physician.

A $13K deductible??? Whoa! With $9K per year premiums that’s $22K out of pocket before the insurance pays a dime. (not counting any co-pays) Insane!

I wonder if their child will be stupid too!?!

If they raise it, yes. Hopefully they could drop it off with a travelling band of gypsies

That would be the compassionate thing for a liberal to do. :-)

I pay about $1200 a month now (self employed, family of five), and the $13k deductible. When I hear people say “insane” (like you), I’m wondering what you do for insurance? But I figure most folks have a job where “the Man” is paying, so the costs are hidden. But the costs are still there - and someone (all of us?) will pay, in the end.

Eh - reminds me of working for a small company where I wasn’t getting paid much as we were getting it started. The boss said “Don’t worry - you’ll get your reward in the end.”

“That’s okay - I’m getting it in the end already!”

Oh, I know the song. Just seems to me that 0bamaCare is more likely to kill you than keep you prisoner in a bad dream.

No, the answer is to pay for your own medical expenses instead of looking for a free ride off everyone else. I paid for two kids out of pocket without insurance. I never dreamed of forcing someone else to pay for it.

They are ENTITLED....entitled to a specific physician because they finally paid their money.
The people below decks can rotate doctors.

I don't have insurance or a job. If I could somehow carve $25K per year out of my budget I would put it in an income fund. If I could manage to stay healthy for 10 years I would have well over $300K in the fund earning something like $14K per year. It would take a major illness to wipe that out.

If you could go 15 or 20 years without touching it you would have some real serious money.

That's very inexpensive insurance. Unless they're in a rural county there were probably non-HMO options. Or the private market. But no, that wouldn't be $375 a month, taxpayers wouldn't be footing part of the bill. I'm confident it's exactly what the architects of the plan had in mind.

The free market is the best solution, but even Republicans now seem more inclined to tweak Obamacare rather than unravel the market distortions created by government meddling in the first place.

For example, all I want is catastrophic coverage. Give me a really low premium and cover me so that I’m not wiped out by a health emergency. Let me pay cash for everything else—preventive care, routine visits, etc. Ah! We can’t allow that, because Ms. Julia wants government (essentially other taxpayers) to cover everything, even her birth control, AND she wants it free, too.

“...he found out it would be $750.00 per month with a $13,000.00 deductible.”

Ye-oww! Just think what that kind of money still buys today. That would finance a very nice car, easily feed a family of four, or pay a big chunk of a mortgage payment.
