NORRIDGE, Ill. (CBS) – Less than a day after telling graduates they would not receive their diplomas until they apologize for tossing their caps in the air — despite being told not to — a suburban school district has reversed course.

On Wednesday, Ridgewood Community High School District Supt. Robert Lupo posted on his blog that Ridgewood High School graduates repeatedly were told not to throw their caps in the air at the end of Tuesday night’s commencement ceremony, because people could get hurt.

Sorry Ridgewood. That’s a time honored tradition in American schools, both high school and college. Deal with it.

You know how brutal those clothe covered cap edges can be...wow what a wuss. Can he walk with the sun behind him for fear of his shadow?

Maybe if they were graduating from German World War 1 recreation school I could see the risk of injury.

You know we need to make fun if these idiots not take them seriously. They need a few wedgies and to be strung up on the flag pole. I think it’s time to embrace the “bully” title.

You and me agree on that, but unfortunately for us, it’s a brave new stupid world. Heard this discussed on a talk show today, and while the hosts initially took the side of tradition, a lot of callers pointed out that the problem is not the kids who toss their caps in the air, but the stupid yay-hoos who frisbee them at other people, or out into the crowd. One guy said he got a scratched cornea being beaned by a spinning cap. The tradition would be fine if the kids all respected it, but, well, you know the era we’re living in. FReegards.

See my #10. Unfortunately, it’s apparently not just “cap tossing” anymore. More like spinning mortar boards.

After reading the article, perhaps the retiring superintendent shouldn’t receive his pension until he apologizes for treating his newest alumni and voting constituents of his school district in a “disrespectful and insubordinate manner.”

We’re finally at the confluence of enough cheap technology to catch and prosecute each thrower and enough attorneys to pursue each victim and we’ll let this slide? /s

High school graduation was capped off with a fun/drunk ride through Mayberry ... mooning the populace.

I think they still do it .... some 50 years later.

"...because people could get hurt."

He's right, you know. Over that past ten years, I must have read that 100 people were decapitated by flying mortarboards. This guy was personally responsible for a number of them...

Idea. A new kind of hat for today’s grads. Mortarboards are so old school.

Next up...concussions from mortarboards. Obama can host a summit on graduation concussions or scratched corneas.

Um, I don't think even people outside the bubble expect to get a scratched cornea at a graduation ceremony.
