A majority of Americans support having businesses be compelled to provide contraceptive services as part of a healthcare plan, argues the findings of a recently released poll.
Conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute, the poll found that of about 1,100 respondents, 61 percent, felt that "publicly-held corporations" should provide contraception as part of their free healthcare plans.
57 percent of respondents felt that "privately-owned corporations" should be compelled to do the same, while only a slight majority, 51 percent, believed small businesses should be required to do so.
"With the exception of churches and other places of worship, most Americans believe that employers should be required to provide their employees with healthcare plans that cover contraception at no cost," reads a PRRI report released on Monday.
"However, Americans draw distinctions based on the type and size of the employer. Opinions about the types of employers that should be required to provide health insurance that includes contraception coverage are largely unchanged from 2012."
The sample space was comprised of 214 white evangelical Protestants, 147 white mainline Protestants, 235 Catholics, 163 white Catholics, 192 minority Protestants, and 164 unaffiliated.
PRRI's report on the poll comes as the United States Supreme Court considers a case wherein two businesses are seeking an exemption from the Department of Health and Human Services' "preventive services" mandate.
Hobby Lobby Inc. of Oklahoma and Conestoga Wood Specialties of Pennsylvania have sued to be given an exemption from the mandate due to religious objections to providing certain types of birth control that can lead to the early termination of a pregnancy, which are listed in the mandate. While Hobby Lobby won its case before the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, Conestoga lost before the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.
Both lawsuits were brought before the Supreme Court, where oral arguments were made in late March. A decision is expected sometime this month.
The results of the PRRI poll contrast sharply with a poll conducted on the same issue by WPA Opinion Research last November. In a sample space of 801 likely voters, WPA found that nearly 60 percent of respondents opposed the contraception mandate. This was comprised of 51 respondents who "strongly opposed" the mandate and 8 percent who "somewhat opposed" it.
WPA's poll was commissioned by the Alliance Defending Freedom and the Family Research Council, groups that oppose the mandate.
Another finding of the PRRI poll was that 77 percent of respondents supported allowing public officials to open town meetings with prayer. This majority was found even among respondents who identified themselves as religiously unaffiliated, with 58 percent supporting prayer at official meetings.

I wish you were correct, but different polls are showing a trend of SHIFTING morality in this country.
To make a long story short, most Americans do not adhere to Christian morality anymore.

I’m really getting sick and tired of the flip-flopping when it comes to these stupid public polls.
“Oh, gay marriage should be untouchable even though a majority of people don’t like it...but we must obey a majority of the people on gun control”.
The fact is, business should be compelled to do nothing more than pay a person for a day’s work. Buying insurance, contraception, groceries, whatever....should be left up the individual. It’s no ones business what an employee buys or does not buy. My point here is that health insurance is just another product we should buy in the same way we buy car insurance or batteries. It should not be hooked into to our employment. It’s a quirk left over from the WW II era.
With that said, I do not hink Healthcare should be socialized. It should simply be paid for by an individual not a company. I should be able to cover not only my 35 year old son, but my neighbor as well if I chose to do so....just like I can with Auto Insurance. Get my point.
Healthcare needs reform and step one should be getting it away from HR departments and on the table of regular folks.

Fortunately we live in a constitutional republic and a mob put together by some left wing polling outfit does not make the rules. At least we used to live in a constitutional republic. Who knows?
This goes beyond just moral collapse and towards complete collapse of society....whatever is ‘free’ is good. Government is benevolent and business is evil. It’s a breakdown of everything that made America strong.
That's why the US is a representative republic, and not a democracy.

When the debate first started about Obamacare covering birth control I heard non political people say it was good because then we would not be paying welfare to these people for their illegitimate kids. I bet that is how a lot of people think about this.
They polled a dishonest question. They said “free”. There is no such thing. Also if you asked the question a different and I believe more accurate way such as “If you owned a business should you be forced by government to pay for benefits as the government sees fit even if it goes against your beliefs/conscience?” I’m sure the result would be different. Much like the gay marriage question. Polls that don’t cast the question in a way that casts it in a positive light show an evenly or slight edge against it. If however they ask a question like “Do you believe gay marriage should be legal so that gays can get married like anyone else?” it relies on a complete falsehood context. Gay married is not illegal anywhere in the US. The government just didn’t recognize it. The same goes for the equality question. I bet if this question “Do you support gay marriage and alternative sexual lifestyles to be taught to your children in public schools?” you’d see quickly how little Americans really have changed in their attitudes but of course that is why the left has worked so hard to create a hostile environment so that people who don’t agree face potential job loss threats if they don’t answer “correctly”.
I’m not surprised at this poll. It wanted a specific result so it setup the question to get it. Conservative organizations need to sponsor more polls so that at least there isn’t just one set of biased polls out there favoring the left.
It would not surprise me one bit if we get to the point where mandatory sterilization becomes a condition of employment for a lot of companies.
You know I’m getting to the point that if it keeps the low info voters from reproducing, it may not be so bad.
I am in favor of adding it to the pay stub showing $15 deduction for each employee from their pay each month.
This would be the Company collecting contributions like the IRS collects withholding of taxes.
This would make the point that the company is passing along the responsibility to you for your personal protection off the job.
