White House Faces Growing Fury in Congress Over Bowe Bergdahl Deal
The Los Angeles Times ^ | Wednesday, June 4, 2014 | Michael A. Memoli and Lisa Mascaro

"I think that they expected everybody just to fall in line," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and one of those who received a personal apology from a senior White House aide.

The White House struggled Wednesday to quell a political storm in Congress over the trade of five Taliban leaders for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl and to repair relations with Democratic and Republican lawmakers outraged over the lack of consultation..

The two-front battle on Capitol Hill deepened as a 17-minute video, shot and released by the Taliban, showed Bergdahl looking thin, pale and dazed before he was hustled onto a Black Hawk helicopter by U.S. special forces and flown to safety.

The video did not answer questions about why Bergdahl left his outpost in eastern Afghanistan in June 2009, or whether any Americans died searching for him, as some former members of his unit have claimed.

Stung by mounting criticism that they had failed to notify Congress before moving the five Afghan prisoners from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, administration and military officials provided a classified briefing to the full Senate, a rare occurrence. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel agreed to testify in the House next week, with more hearings to follow.

Senators were shown a video shot by the Taliban late last year; it has not been publicly released.

The fury in Congress was bipartisan, with some senior Democrats firing broadsides as the White House sent emissaries to apologize to key lawmakers and to promise better engagement in the future.

"I think that they expected everybody just to fall in line," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and one of those who received a personal apology from a senior White House aide.

Pride goeth before the fall.

Obama is a proud man. He is, and will continue to be, a failure as president.

There is nothing more to this than that.

This is not an attempt to help Democrats distance themselves from him. This is not an attempt to distract us from the VA scandal. This is not his way of signalling to the mullahs that the USA is ready to become a caliphate. This is not his way to give a shout out to his gay buddies that he's one of them. This is not another step in the Gramscian-Socialist-Marxist-Bilderberg-Rockefeller-Rothschild-Soros-NWO plan to turn America into a UN puppet.

This is him just being proud, arrogant, and stupid.

Don’t we all feel so safe with these people in Congress

making sure the president is being very forthright to the citizenry?

They get lied to. They get a WG aide to come by to give the apology and all’s is forgotten.

Another day of lies from this government.

Feinstein you WILL fall in line. You and all of your Democrat toadies for Obama will bow your knee to your Supreme Prompter Reader, just as you have done for the past six years. Quit pretending like you care.

“I think that they expected everybody just to fall in line,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.),”

Well that’s what you people HAVE BEEN DOING throughout ALL the numerous scandals that have occurred starting with FAST AND FURIOUS. You have carried his water or kept silent. You are just as guilty as he is. I will enjoy seeing the dim party go down in flames.

“”I think that they expected everybody just to fall in line,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and one of those who received a personal apology from a senior White House aide.”

Several points: Congress strictly forbade Obama making this swap with a law they added to the Defense Appropriations bill. He acknowledged he was aware of it when he issued a signing statement that said, essentially, “it doesn’t apply to me.” He knowingly violated the law. Mistake two is sending senior aides to apologize and promise better communications with Congress in the future. He could have started better communications by calling them directly, or even getting off his duff and visiting them or inviting them to the White House. LBJ got everything he wanted from Congress. He was a terrible president but he knew how to get his way. He regularly telephoned Congressmen just for a chat. The calls were on a regular rotation. But, Obama sends an aide and promises, essentially, to send more aides in the future.

Bush used signing statements too, but I think it’s high time the Supreme Court issues a ruling on them. There’s nothing in the Constitution that the President can pick and choose the laws he follows.

3...2...1...Circle the wagons! Dems NEVER give ground on any issue or scandal.

While there may be an initial round of indignation, White House Talking Points will soon become THE WORD.

RATS will never sacrifice one of their own, while evil republicans benefit.

Now shut up and kiss the ring.

But in this case the ring is on his posterior between the cheeks. I don't think it's tasting too good.
