Dumbest Defense Yet of Bergdahl Deal?
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 06/07/2014 7:56:31 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

Mark Jacobson may have set a new standard for dumb defenses of the Bergdahl deal. Appearing on MSNBC's Up With Steve Kornacki today, scholar and Afghanistan veteran Jacobson suggested that opposition to the Bergdahl deal arises out of the soldier's religion and politics. He made a mind-boggling analogy: "My parents freaked out when I went to Afghanistan both times. If I had been captured. Do I want someone to say this nice Jewish kid over in Afghanistan, a little bit liberal, not really sure if we're going to go get him? Absolutely not."

What?? If a nice liberal Jewish kid had served, to quote Susan Rice, with "honor and distinction," and a deal to retrieve him were on the table that wouldn't seriously jeopardize our national security interests, can anyone conceive that we wouldn't make it? The objections to the Bergdhahl deal arise out of the very high national security price exacted in exchange for someone who seemingly was at best AWOl, if not a deserter. Giving the lie to Jacobson's lunacy was fellow panelist Jack Jacobs, who objected to the Bergdahl deal. Jacobs, by the way, grew up a nice Jewish kid in NYC, and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service in Vietnam.

This is the first time that I’ve ever seen any claim that Bergdahl was Jewish. Can this possibly be true? If so, I would certainly have expected to have seen it reported before (over and over ad nauseum). IIRC, every report on Daniel Pearl’s ordeal started off with “Jewish captive Daniel Pearl....” or “Jewish reporter Daniel Pearl....”.

Republicans really are felony stupid.

It’s not about Bergdahl! Really! It wouldn’t matter if the POW was a patriot and saint. Obama never had to make this kind of deal for anyone. Are you trying to tell me they wouldn’t have traded for one super-dangerous terrorist?

And why weren’t the negotiations done with others in the loop? Couldn’t they have collectively come up with a better deal? Hell, a freshman in High School could have come up with a better deal.

It’s not about Bergdahl but that’s the WH talking points. Those nasty Republicans picking on this guy or he could be your kid.

Change the conversation, GOP! Don’t discuss Bergdahl and whether or not he was worth it. No one was worth it. This is how Dems keep winning, they control the conversation.

Just to clarify, Jacobson wasn’t saying Bergdahl was Jewish. I believe he was implying that some people objected to the deal because of reports Bergdahl had converted to Islam. Jacobson was making the odd analogy to someone hypothetically objecting to rescuing HIM because he’s Jewish.

I am starting to suspect that Bergdahl is a homosexual, which would be a gigantic bombshell in this deal. Based in his unconventional background and behavior.

Bergdahl studied and practiced fencing and martial arts before switching to ballet classes at the Sun Valley Ballet School in Ketchum, Idaho. He never owned a car; he rode his bicycle everywhere. He spent time in a Buddhist monastery between 2007 and 2008.

According to the Rolling Stone article from a couple of years ago his parents were “ both devout Calvinists”....

IMO, we have already lost this. Why? Because we have allowed the fascists to turn the whole thing into a debate about the traitor.

NO! It’s really about the Five Bad Guys and the fact that Obama released them.

Bergdahl is not Jewish. His ancestors were Scandinavian Christians.

Sorry. I misread his story as being about Bergdahl rather than himself.

Note to self: Have that second cup of coffee before posting in the morning. :=)

I think Mark Jacobson was menaing HE is Jewish (although he is not military).

We were told that Bowe Bergdahl was celebrating Christmas and Easter (and the fourth of July??) with the Taliban.

Even though from appearances, Bergdahl and his dad have gone muslim.

I’ve seen posts that the dad (Bob) is still a Christian. Are there many Christian fathers who study deep history and language when their kids are abducted by cultists?

NO! It’s really about the Five Bad Guys and the fact that Obama released them.

It's also about the administration bypassing Congress yet again.

It's also about the administration selling 8 kinds of bullsh!t and refusing to apologize.

It's also about The Most Transparent Administration Ever requiring those who served with him to sign non-disclosure agreements.

It's also about appointed Democrat activists in the administration selling more BS that the other men deployed with him were war criminals and liars.

It'a also about...

He may not be a homosexual by choice (some chatter indicates he was provided with a wife/wives and may have even sired kids over there) but he may have had to dance like a pretty boy for them...

The “side issues” are examples of repeated behavior used by the administration in EVERY scandal just as the Monica Lewinsky case proved that the Clinton administration was paying off witnesses (including Monica with a six figure “salary” at Revlon courtesy of one of Bill’s team on the board of directors) to lie under oath. There were also examples of intimidating witnesses, seeking to destroy evidence, using media collusion for spin control, attacking the critics on a personal level, launching missiles to distract attention, etc...

If you're referring to Jacobson, he was A Medal of Honor recipient during Vietnam.
