What Maya Angelou taught Michelle Obama about black beauty
washingtonpost.com ^ | June 7, 2014 | Vanessa Williams

Michelle Obama has largely ignored unflattering critiques of her physical appearance, often tinged with racial overtones, that have been lobbed by people who apparently still have not accepted the fact that African Americans inhabit the White House. At a memorial service Saturday for poet Maya Angelou, who died last week at age 86, Obama offered revealing insights about how she and other black women sometimes define their beauty in the context of the larger society’s standards. The first time I read “Phenomenal Woman,” I was struck by how she celebrated black women’s beauty like no one had ever dared to before. Our curves, our stride, our strength, our grace. Her words were clever and sassy; they were powerful and sexual and boastful. And in that one singular poem, Maya Angelou spoke to the essence of black women, but she also graced us with an anthem for all women – a call for all of us to embrace our God-given beauty. And, oh, how desperately black girls needed that message. As a young woman, I needed that message. As a child, my first doll was Malibu Barbie. That was the standard for perfection. That was what the world told me to aspire to. But then I discovered Maya Angelou, and her words lifted me right out of my own little head. The first lady went on to say that Angelou’s empowering message has motivated her through school, career and family challenges throughout her life, “words so powerful that they carried a little black girl from the South Side of Chicago all the way to the White House.” Beauty is more than skin deep, especially for women of color. Whether we are seen as beautiful can have a huge impact on how we are treated, protected and loved —

I assume a "barf alert" would be redundant.

Michelle Obama has largely ignored unflattering critiques of her physical appearance, often tinged with racial overtones,

WRONG.

The criticism about her physical appearance has nothing to do with her race. Nothing.

She dresses in cheap "mod" fashions.

She has lousy slouchy posture.

When she dresses for state dinners and formal events, there is often too much skin showing.

NONE of this has to do with her race. No First Lady has done this before, but since she's black it gets tagged as a "racist" complaint.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however misguided it may be.

I don't agree with the poster: A "barf alert" and a "you can't fix stupid" alert should be provided. I'm suffering from a temporary loss of IQ after reading this piece.

You may adore Thomas Sowell

You may have supported Clarence Thomas

You may truly believe that Allen West is God's gift to America.

And the list can go on and on...

BUT IF YOU DO NOT LOVE BARACK HUSSEIN AND MICHELLE OBAMA NO MATTER WHAT THEY DO

YOU ARE A RACIST!

“I assume a “barf alert” would be redundant.”

And why didn’t you? Judging by the 1st paragraph alone, barf super duper alert’ won’t be enough for this crap.

Sweet God in Heaven!!!! What CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! “Beauty is what we women say it is, it’s all in me, it’s about me.”

Sure, honey, and I am a high-status male, pursued by women my entire life, because I SAY THAT I AM! I will it, therefore it is!!!

I can only wonder why the world’s women don’t seem to have gotten my memo...

Very well stated and excellent, true points.

But you know the left. Whenever anyone disagrees with them, they cannot argue the facts or ideas. They can only attack their opponent...usually with ad hominem attacks.

To say that someone ‘opposes’ because they are racist, sexist, homophobic or xenophobic is the A Bomb in the debate arena.

Not only does the left keep their finger crazy-glued to that button, they have pressed it so quickly and routinely over the years that it has become their ‘flinch’ to any feint that they see coming.

Sheri Belafonte, Halle Berry, Diana Ross back in the day, Beyonce, etc. There are plenty of beautiful black women and even more ugly white ones.

Michelle Obama's unattractiveness comes from things not related to race - hostility to America, too casual and not respectful enough to her position, too many photos of her with impatient or sneering expressions at events that deserve respect, dressing like a mall rat when she should be looking like a classy lady.

Nothing to do with her race, everything to do with her attitude.

Yeah, Wilbur, I knocked shoes with Beauty. She's a fine filly, a real keeper, but I wasn't ready to settle down. Besides, it was always my goal to win the Kentucky Derby. And I wanted to concentrate on training. Sea Biscuit and me used to run around. Yeah, laugh if you want but I was pretty fast when I was a colt. Lots of tracks, lots of mares, lots of memories. Ask Carol to get us beers and I'll go into greater details. And I was a war horse in the Korean war, won the Silver Star but you knew that. Pusan was a cold, dangerous place ...
