On Saturday, after California Chrome lost his chance to become horse racing's first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978, co-owner Steve Coburn went off during a post-race interview, saying it's a "coward's way out" for owners to only run their horses in one of the three Triple Crown races.

So. Just winning one of the three TC races is very lucrative, if not running in the others gives you a better chance to win one, it beats running in all three and winning nothing.
So Coburn is like the Don Sterling of horse racing, only less educated, much less money, no chicks on the side, and a Nevada country hick to boot. Shouldn’t let these folk into a ‘blue-blood’ sport and insult same ‘blue-bloods’...........back to the farm with you and don’t come back till yer mind is right!....or have a horse that we all can make some REAL money off of.
Logically I’m probably off course....but I can see what he is saying.
Honestly, I’m glad all the horses and jockeys are ok and now CC can retire to a life of stud fees and green pasture. It’s still a good story - now tarnished by the sore loser comments.

What bothered me (besides the sore-loser diatribe of California Chrome’s owner) was how NBC spent at least the first ten minutes of the post-race show interviewing the owner of the horse which finished tied for fourth, rather than the owner of the winner. They did do a quick interview of the winning jockey, but I got the impression that they wanted him to apologize for “spoiling” California Chrome’s Triple Crown.
How would not running in the other 2 give you a better chance at one? Seems to me that might be more difficult since it’s one chance instead of 3.

As you may have read, my initial and subsequent comments concern Mr. Coburn’s outburst following the loss. This is not Mr. Coburn’s first rodeo, if you will. This is a race. His horse wasn’t good enough.
Well, let’s assume that running in the other two weakens a horse, and you determine which length gives you the best chance to win, you go ahead and focus on that one race....It costs a ton of money to enter into one of those races.

Citation won 19 of 20 (yes, 20) starts in 1948. With all due respect to the admittedly faster Secretariat, Citation in his three-year-old campaign was the epitome of durability and stamina.
I thought they determined that Chrome wound up finishing 5th, it looked like the 4th place finisher just beat him out at the end.
Oh he’ll make some money but the big payoff would have been stud fees for a triple crown winner. Remember, this guy is not rich, used most of his funds to bring this horse along. I fully understand his frustration at missing the ‘pot of gold’. He did have a point but the rules is the rules. And he expressed his frustration poorly. Should of listened to his wife.
So wasn’t that part of CC’s owner’s complaint - there were “fresher” horses in the race? I wonder what the outcome would have been if only horses that had run in the first 2 races were allowed to run today?
Oh well....it’s only a race. I just happen to love horses and got caught up in the CC story. Beautiful horse!
I don’t think Chrome would have won today regardless, he just didn’t have it.

Why? The guy is getting beat up for speaking his mind while frustrated after losing. He’s not some rich sports star, or rich team/horse owner. He is truly a ‘country hick’ in the ‘big leagues’ for the first time. Could he have expressed himself on a higher level? Sure. Maybe he will next time if it happens again. Otherwise he is who he is.......
How disappointing.
I kinda liked the owners after viewing all the media hype. Cool story. Humble, simple folks.
If the best they can muster is to be poor losers they have lost my respect
