ROANOKE, Virginia — There’s no doubt Ed Gillespie is the underdog in the Virginia Senate race.
He’s polled well behind the man he’s trying to unseat, Democrat Mark Warner. The incumbent is the richest member of the Senate and a well-liked figure in the state. Meanwhile, many Virginians still don’t know who Gillespie is.
But Gillespie, a former Republican National Committee chairman, is an old hand at campaigns. And now that he’s the candidate, he insists he can pull off the upset.
“I assure you I have never analyzed a race more carefully than this one, and it’s a very winnable race,” the 52-year-old said after nabbing his party’s nomination at a convention this weekend.

I’m pretty much done with voting for our progressive guy because he’s our progressive guy and by definition is better than their progressive guy. Whether I vote for Gillespie or Warner, I’m still getting a prog. At least we know Marky Mark is a prog. AFAIC, the jury is still out on Gillespie’s conservative core. I think he’s a prog deep down. He needs to convince me he’s not.
I didn’t really have a horse in this race. None of the candidates were all that impressive. I do hate coronations- and the fix was in for Ed! from the git-go. Based on history, when that happens, conservatism always loses.
You know what I say - every time conservatism runs, it wins!
Except all those times it loses.
He ran against Mark Warner and beat him.
JWarner has a history of supporting dems. This endorsement means nothing to me. It will mean something to the low-info voters, however.
It just shows have divided the RPV is. Bolling essentially did the same thing to Cuccinelli.
The jury’s still out on Gillespie’s conservative creds, IMHO.
Not for me. He is a RINO. Maybe that is what wins now in VA. We are more blue than red. We will have GOP candidates that talk like Chris Christie. The move is to the Left, especially in NoVA.
And as I said before, the window for him to reach out to the conservative/constitutionalist grassroots is closing. His GOPe supporters have vilified me one time too many. *I* am not the enemy. The dems treat me and my fellow constitutionalists better than the R’s.
Have you read this piece by the RPV Executive Director, Shaun Kenney? I have been calling for his resignation.

Sorry but you are wrong. With 30+ million illegals currently here already and millions more pouring over our border every year illegal immigration is the ONLY issue that matters. If we lose on illegal immigration we lose the country, forever. Which is why the ruling class is pushing with all it's power for amnesty. Amnesty will once and forever break the back of conservative America and allow for the continued looting of middle class wealth. What little is left of it.
Remember when the GOP controlled the Senate, as well as the House and the Presidency, and rolled back all that liberal legislation, reduced the size and scope of government, and stopped the illegal alien invasion? Neither do I.
Perhaps so. He's the best we've got to try and do our part in the nationwide attempt to gain enough seats to take over the U.S. Senate. We can at least try and stop Obama and his agenda. I'm not voting third party and electing Democrats like what happened when Oliver North lost.
Yes I understand and if I lived in Va I would hold my nose and vote for him too. It’s just to bad if are being forced to vote for a crony capitalist RINO. Better then a Marxist, but not much better.
Agree with you, but it is both legal and illegal immigration that will destroy the GOP and the country. We don’t need 1.1 million legal immigrants a year, two-thirds of whom are future Dem voters.
If there were a primary with a credible anti-amnesty opponent to a RINO, I’d vote for him.
Ed Gillespie isn’t an incumbent. He has no voting record.
It’s Mark Warner, the deciding vote for Obamacare, vs. Ed Gillespie.
I’m all in for Ed.
Remember when a single Republican voted for Obamacare? Neither do I.
The Tea Party has won some big battles. There are a few good men in the Senate. The fight is on, but the Tea Party Senators can do nothing while Harry Reid is majority leader. We need to fight hard to unseat Mitch in leadership. Let the fight be now for the leadership.
There is only one reason I occasionally vote RINO. It is possible to hold their feet to the fire. I’ll vote John Cornyl this nov. I voted against him in the primary but I’ll vote for him in the general since I know enough letters, phone calls, etc will make him “rethink” his position on any particular issue. That is the only good thing about a RINO, they can be pushed into “doing the right thing” if enough pressure is brought to bare.
And remember when the liberal legislation was stopped being created by the liberals? Remember? Oh I forgot you were demented.
Bolling did a lot of damage to the party. His facebook post congratulating Gillespie was full to overflowing with comments about taking the party back from all the exremely extreme right wing extremists. At the very least, it was poor manners. Frankly, I’m sick of that crap. Like I said, *I* am not the enemy yet the GOPe treats me like I have leprosy or something.
I am trying to at least give Gillespie a chance to mend the rift. If he is smart, he will make the attempt. I don’t hold out much hope of that happening, though. And I will point out, that I am giving him more of a chance to mend the rift than the GOPe gave Cucc.
Yes, I read that when it came out. I used to think Shaun was a conservative. Clearly, I was mistaken in that belief. In fact, his arrogant pomposity gets a little old.
Maybe Ed can pull off an upset, but some thought the same of Romney in WI, MI, OR, and other liberal states too.
Much more possible than a complete toad like Mark Warner.
That said, the RINOs aren't going to have easy sailing just because a few of them slipped through the cracks this time. We're going to keep primarying them - but it takes a good, strong candidate with money. Tea Party needs ground game. They've got it in some states.
