Rand Paul throws weight behind immigration reform [AMNESTY] effort

Makes calls with Grover Norquist seeking conservative support

Sen. Rand Paul on Wednesday waded deeper into an issue that has proved perilous to some of his GOP colleagues, throwing his political weight behind an establishment lobby effort to get Congress to reform the country’s immigration system this year.

Mr. Paul, a libertarian-leaning Republican from Kentucky and possible 2016 presidential hopeful, participated in a telephone conference call to conservative and business leaders in favor of immigration reform in an effort brokered by anti-tax activist Grover Norquist, The Washington Times has learned.

The business group, the Partnership for a New American Economy, immediately blasted an email Wednesday evening to supporters crowing that Mr. Paul had formally joined its pro-reform effort.

The timing of the call only heightened the potential stakes for Mr. Paul just one day after House Majority Leader Eric Cantor was shockingly ousted from office in the Virginia Republican primary in favor of a little-known college professor.

Tea party activists who whipped up a get-out-the-vote effort for Mr. Cantor’s opponent said they were motivated by the incumbent’s advocacy for immigration reform, actions on Obamacare and vote to raise the nation’s debt ceiling.

Mr. Cantor was the second high-profile Republican to suffer political damage by stepping forward on the immigration issue. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, another potential presidential contender, lost the support of his tea party base when he advocated a plan for immigration that some argued created a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants.

Mr. Paul, a longtime favorite of the tea party movement, has made it clear that he believes Congress needs the courage to enact immigration reform.

Really sad if he thinks of doing this.

Immigration reform?

How about:

1) Securing the border with the military and/or National Guard
2) Mandatory e-verify for all jobs annually
3) $100k fines for business who fail to everify or knowingly subvert everify.
4) Identity theft crimes for illegal immigrants carrying mandatory 3 year prison stays.
5) Linking visas to the everify system

That should be plenty enough.

I really pray that Rand Paul is playing Bad Cop/Good Cop game with the establishment with Ted Cruz....

I really pray that this is the case....

But I will probably be disappointed... I am glad i don’t live in Kentucky and have to make the decision to primary his rear end should the above not be the case...

Paul senate.gov site

I do not support amnesty, I support legal immigration and recognize that the country has been enriched by those who seek the freedom to make a life for themselves. However, millions of illegal immigrants are crossing our border without our knowledge and causing a clear threat to our national security. I want to work in the Senate to secure our border immediately. In addition, I support the creation of a border fence and increased border patrol capabilities.

Immigrants should meet the current requirements, which should be enforced and updated. I realize that subsidizing something creates more of it, and do not think the taxpayer should be forced to pay for welfare, medical care and other expenses for illegal immigrants. Once the subsidies for illegal immigration are removed, the problem will likely become far less common.

I support local solutions to illegal immigration as protected by the 10th amendment. I support making English the official language of all documents and contracts.

Millions crossing our border without our knowledge constitutes a clear threat to our nation's security. Instead of closing military bases at home and renting space in Europe, I am open to the construction of bases to protect our border.

Let me know when Paul changes his position on immigration.

Let me know when Paul changes his position on immigration.

You purposefully ignore all of his past and current statements that support Open Borders and Amnesty, including his Amnesty plan.

His website does not match his spoken words, therefore, Rand Paul is a Liar, and you don't care too much about the truth either.

Hanging out with Grove Norquist speaks so loud I just can’t hear the nice words on his website.

Anyhow, I’ll be watching for his repudiation of this.

Now Breitbart has it up.

From the Breitbart story:

“Paul, a potential 2016 contender, reportedly said that “amnesty is a word that’s trapped us,” and, according to CNN, emphasized, “If you want immigration reform, there has to be openness to compromise.” Earlier on Wednesday, talk radio host Rush Limbaugh declared that when politicians in Washington say “immigration reform” what they really mean is “amnesty.”

“I say everywhere I go, ‘I am for immigration reform,’” Paul said, according to the Wall Street Journal.

This is not the first time Paul has embraced amnesty. As Breitbart News reported, Paul spoke at the University of Chicago earlier this year and told David Axelrod, the director of the school’s Institute for Politics, that he would “expand the work visa program to include” all of the country’s illegal immigrants. Hispanic groups were still not satisfied, calling Paul “offensive” even after he said he favored allowing all of the country’s illegal immigrants to remain in the country.

Paul participated in a monthly call with Bloomberg’s Partnership for a New American Economy and Norquist that seeks to push Congress to pass amnesty legislation this year. Paul diminished the role that amnesty had in Brat’s victory...”

Well it looks like there is some meat to this story, if Paul is joining the amnesty crowd he is dead to me. He’d better address this pronto.
