ISTANBUL — The likely breakup of Iraq into feuding ethnic and sectarian bastions accelerated Friday as Iraq’s senior Shiite Muslim cleric broke years of support for the central government and decreed that every able-bodied Shiite man had a religious obligation to defend the sect’s holy sites from rebellious Sunni Muslims led by fighters from the extremist Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

In answer to the call, thousands of Shiites many with militia experience from the sectarian war that pitted Sunnis against Shiites and killed thousands from 2006 to 2008 flooded the cities of Baghdad, Najaf and Karbala to receive weapons, enlist in organized units and receive their orders.

This goes all of the way back to British and French redrawing of the area during and after WW-1. I predict that the entire area will devolve back into tribal areas of influence and that Iraq and Iran will effectively cease to be nation states.

I think this is a good thing. What better than them efficiently killing one another?

Wonder if there is a map than shows which of the camel jockey countries are which sect? Would make it easier to keep score.

All this crap started in the last Century with Gavrillo Prinzip and Oil. I wonder what kind of world we would have today if it hadn’t all started then.

Coincidences are intriguing. Another coincidence: Isis is the goddess of magic, fertility, death, healing and rebirth. She became the most powerful ancient god/goddess when she devised a plan to kick Ra the sun god from the throne. Nothing like a little in your face paganism.

I don't think a religious civil war can be avoided at this point in Iraq.

Particularly since the supporters of each side (Saudi Arabia and Iran) would each benefit from the resulting rise in oil prices.

IOW, open jihad, instead of public denial, just as his Iranian superiors want. Moslems everywhere can now heed the call and resume their struggle against their mortal enemies, other moslems. Our responsibility is to make sure they get plenty of one way plane, train, and bus tickets and never run out of ammo until we can hear the last death rattle.

Trying to civilize these people has failed.

let the shiites and the sunnis fight it out. The more they hate and kill each other the less they will bother us.

That’s about right and it’s true that both the Persians and the Soddies say that they need 100+ dollar oil to keep their countries running. The interesting part tho is that they must feed the beast to keep the level of instability up. Without the constant agitation the regular camel humpers of the entire ME would quietly go back to goat banging. It’s easy to show that the expense of agitation will kill these dummies off before the gains of high priced oil ever really show up. The whole thing is mutual-economic-suicide which will keep them all right square in the 12th century which seems to be just where they want to be.
