Driver who killed child tells victim’s family ‘life goes on’

A UK driver who ran over and killed a five-year-old boy while travelling twice the speed limit reportedly argued with the victim’s family outside court before telling them: “S**t happens, life goes on.”

On Friday, a jury found 31-year-old Wayne Payne guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to five years in prison Monday. A judge bailed Payne on “compassionate grounds” for the weekend so that he could see his two daughters before serving his sentence.

When the driver encountered the victim’s family outside the court, The Birmingham Mail reports it was then that Payne argued with the family before uttering the words and walking away.

Cameron Ward and his family returned from an Easter party last April when he was struck by Payne’s blue Vauxhall Vectra. Payne is said to have been driving at 100 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone and did not brake when he hit the rear of the bike Ward was sitting on. The impact sent the child into the air.

The boy’s bike was being pushed by his father as they crossed the road while his mother and four-week-old sister walked ahead. Ward’s father was also injured in the incident.

“You were let out on trust by me for the weekend and the fact that you behaved in that way is a very unfortunate state of affairs,” Judge Stuart Rafferty told Payne Monday.

Payne reportedly handed a letter of apology to the court after he said he spent the weekend “reflecting on his clash with the [victim's] family.”

In a victim impact statement, Ward’s mother said her son’s birth was the happiest day of her life.

“My heart breaks every time that I think about him,” she said. “Nothing is the same, nobody is the same and everybody hurts. We love and miss him so much.”

Payne was sentenced to five years in prison and was also banned from driving for five years.

Well, the guy has a point. I mean this took place back in April.

What difference, at this point, does it make?

Sickening. He gets to see his kids before he goes to prison?

I’d have strangled him with the strap of my purse. I chose that purse for a reason.

If this douchebag had used the phrase ‘s**t happens’ in reference to him running over a relative of mine like this, they’d have needed every court bailiff in the building to drag me off him as I beat him to a pulp.

“S**t happens, life goes on.”

And thus Moveon.org was born.

Maybe if he spent the rest of his life paralyzed from the neck down he’ll remember it every day ...

5 YEARS! 5 stinking years for killing a kid and seemingly having no remorse!
Pathetic! No wonder the arabs are over-running the UK!

This POS is all to prevalent in his ‘thinking’. He’s fine. His children are fine. So what if he broke the law? I am tired of the lawlessness that seems to have infected what used to be decent (maybe I should say polite) society.

"...life goes on."

Not for Cameron Ward.

A judge bailed Payne on “compassionate grounds” for the weekend so that he could see his two daughters before serving his sentence.

A courtesy not extended to Mr. and Mrs. Ward.

Payne was sentenced to five years in prison and was also banned from driving for five years.

Concurrent or consecutive?

I think someone could have killed the guy, right there on the spot and gotten off later with a textbook “temporary insanity” defense.

Hey! Don’t think we do any better!

I post this every so often when the message seems relevant, sort of as a memorial to Mom, as well as to let people know what the justice system is really like.

December 5th, 2001, my mother, Shirley Norkunas, was killed in a car wreck. She was on her way to a Dr.’s appointment. The roads and weather were clear, it was about 9 in the morning, the place was just south of Superior, WI on State Hwy 35. She was driving north toward Superior.

A fellow named Thomas Frankot was heading south that morning, driving on a suspended license. He crossed into my mother’s lane, she was killed instantly in the resulting crash.

Thomas Frankot lived. He was essentially judgement proof, no insurance and with very few assets.

He, after much wrangling, finally pled guilty in September 2002 to driving after suspension and driving left of center.

Previous relevant citations (there are half a dozen or so others)

DWI.
DWI/OAS (Operation After Suspension)
OAS
No Valid License
OAR (Operation after Revocation)
OAR

That was six offenses BEFORE he killed Mom, so you know he was really in trouble this time.

Was he ever.

He was fined $363, license suspended for six months, and given sixty days to pay.

That’s not even the funny part.

Years, much more than the sixty days lapsed. I asked the clerk of courts what happens when the fines aren’t paid.

They suspend his license.

Now, that’s justice for ya.

Oh, it might not any surprise there have been several violations since. He’s walking around to this very day.

I should note that he eventually paid the fines.

Here, maybe. But not in (formerly) Great Britain.

I like the way you think.

I guess they haven’t outlawed lethal purse-straps in California (yet).
