Tuam babies: how a small field in Ireland held big secret

Tucked away between houses on an estate in the Republic of Ireland is a small field that many believe, until recently, had a big secret.

Beneath a grotto of the Virgin Mary, lie flowers and teddy bears by well-wishers in memory of the children of unmarried mothers, described at the time as "fallen women."

It is believed nearly 800 children are buried in the grounds of what was once a mother and baby home run by nuns in Tuam, County Galway.

A child died nearly every two weeks between the mid 1920's and 60's.

After world-wide publicity, the Irish government announced there is to be a state-wide investigation.

Although the terms of reference of the inquiry have yet to be finalised, they will include the hight mortality rate, and burial practice at the mother and baby homes.

The inquiry will also ask whether clinical drug trials were carried out on children and whether there were forced adoptions.

JP Rodgers was born in the Tuam Home and has written two books about his forced seperation from his mother [Video link at URL]...

After decades apart, JP Rodgers was reunited with his mother.

"The day we separated she cut off a lock of my hair as a keepsake and she vowed that no church or state would be able to claim her son as long as she kept his hair", he said."

"Growing up I knew that there was something radically wrong with Irish society."

...

The Ireland at the time was anything but a true republic.

I am tired of asking why the nuns would give death records individually for each of the 796 but not burial records individually for each of the 796 and getting attacked like this.

Perhaps the same that you say about me could be asked by another about your mother? Hmmm?

BTW, this sort of attack from you will only serve to spur me on. It will have the opposite effect.

Please learn to act like a Christian should. Thanks.

Ac ase could be made that you are hardly acting like a Christian should act.

Jesus is soooo proud of you. Not.

You are acting the opposite of how He would act.

I’m not the one deliberately attempting to stir trouble between Catholics and Protestants.

If you want to behave like a Sunni or Shiite, maybe you should join one of those teams.

But yet you keep posting on this thread. Lol. Maybe you are the one obsessed.

You need to repent, Cripplecreek.

You are acting like a jerk. Period.

You have never acted this way towards me on any thread, so why now?

Please don't tell me that you have fallen for the “This is an attack on the RC Church” baloney.

Why are you behaving like a non-Christian would, huh?

And how would it be non-Christian of me to ask where the children are all buried at, and for the Bon Secours nuns to give a location for where they are each and all buried?

The nuns gave death records for each, because that was the law. But they have given no proof of location of burial.

And when we see all of the unending attacks against me and others that is just proof that they have reached the end of the line in their defense. period. Personal attacks are all they have left. Same for you, too?

At BBC: “Child bodies: church has no records”

Archbishop Neury himself said that the church has no burial records for the 796 children.

That is what this is all about, as well as all of the vitriol directed against me and others.

This is why the mud-slinging, vicious personal attacks, name calling, and anti-Christian behavior from lapsed Catholics - grieved by their personal failure(s) and the churchs’s failure on this matter - spurs them on to act the way they do. Sad on their part...

?!?

What, Jesus doesn't like Brony humor?

It's entirely possible. I'm not really very good at making Him happy, truly.

Yes, prior periods in the U.S. indeed had better morality. You must have missed them. Up until the 1960’s in fact. Our society now is not. If you can’tell the difference between today’s morals and say, that of the 1950’s, then you are blind. It appears you are either a libertarian, or verging towards being a Dem. Which is it?

And the issue was never the money that the Catholic Church in Ireland may or may not have had. It was the morality of the times, where you did not have a child out of wedlock, and thus everything was hushed up, including the burials of the babies. But they don’t even know how many graves may o may not exist, but you sure are fast on condemnation. A bit of an anti-Catholic, are we? Why don’t you just live in the past and condemn every right or wrong that has ever occurred? I’m sure that would make you very happy. Get your head out of the past. We’ve got plenty of problems to deal with right here in the present.

How could any priest possibly know who is in a state of grace (or as near as possible) and who is not, among those who come forward for the Eucharist? It’s up to the individual to withhold themselves from partaking in the Sacrament. I’ve done it myself on many occasions when I knew I wasn’t ready. The Pelosis of the world are at fault here (ok, she’s an extreme example), not the Church. In the particular case of my sister, as I stated—she doesn’t go to Mass, ever.

“The nuns gave death records for each, because that was the law. But they have given no proof of location of burial.”

I obviously do not have your intelligence nor education, but I have a reason for no burial records. The kid died. The nuns recorded its death. The nun called to the gardener. The gardener gets his helper. They get the body and two shovels, and bury the kid somewhere in the field. Viola. No burial record.
