A legendary Special Forces commander was quietly forced to leave the U.S. Army after he admitted to a love affair with a Washington Post war correspondent, who quit her job to secretly live with him for almost a year in one of the most dangerous combat outposts in Afghanistan.

U.S. Army Special Operations Command never publicly disclosed that highly-decorated Green Beret Major Jim Gant was relieved of command at the end of a harrowing 22 months in combat in March 2012.

His commanders charged in confidential files that he had "indulged in a self-created fantasy world" of booze, pain pills and sex in a tribal village deep in Taliban and al Qaeda country with his "wife," journalist Ann Scott Tyson.

Why is this any different from administration personnel shacking up with reporters?

Evidence clearly shows they were under the sheets in each other’s company.

The ROK used to be referred to as a TDY tour - “Temporarily Divorced for a Year”

The good major makes me think we have a righteous heir to Hackworth’s legacy.

A Special Forces soldier screwing a woman in a combat zone?

Maybe a local, a pro, or another soldier. But you think it's common for them to import a civilian to shack up with them in the most dangerous place in the world?

If something happened to her, would it have been a terrible black eye for the Army?

The betrayal was of their respective spouses and children

I didn't see this in the article. Did I miss something?

I thought the real Spartans got sex from their comrades-in-arms (ahem). Something about unit cohesion.

Hey, man, you don’t talk to the Colonel. You listen to him. The man’s enlarged my mind. He’s a poet warrior in the classic sense. I mean sometimes he’ll... uh... well, you’ll say “hello” to him, right? And he’ll just walk right by you. He won’t even notice you. And suddenly he’ll grab you, and he’ll throw you in a corner, and he’ll say, “Do you know that ‘if’ is the middle word in life? If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you, if you can trust yourself when all men doubt you”... I mean I’m... no, I can’t... I’m a little man, I’m a little man, he’s... he’s a great man! I should have been a pair of ragged claws scuttling across floors of silent seas...

They ought to have quietly terminated his army career and transferred his payroll over to some obscure Arlington contracting agency. And left him in place in the Kunar.

If you’re winning, keep doing what you’re doing.

It’s all about the 30 seconds of fame and resulting book/movie deal.

They’re all pretty disgusting.

Well Ike had his civilian chauffeur Kay Summersby and Patton had Red Cross volunteer Jean Gordon sent to France. So yeah it was kinda similar. Maybe not common but similar.

not exactly a hottie , he must have been desperate

Personally I reject the ‘go native’ approach

I would support the ‘make them fear us so much they stop fighting is ‘ approach .

How you may ask ? FAE’s ...the are amplified by the mountains and valleys . We could easily turn the Taliban into crispy critters, one and all , if we had the resolve .
ANYONE that messes with America should feel our wrath and not enjoy our tender mercy . Not at all .
They attack us ? Make them pay ....Until they are crawling out from under the ruins with white rags tied to sticks .
Forget nation building . Nation build for those that deserve it , those that demonstrate that they deserve our help . For those that deserve our wrath ; destroy them utterly , and to hell with the anti-war pukes on the home front .
