Wisconsin Elections Board urges voters to not use older registration forms

MADISON – The Wisconsin Government Accountability Board (GAB) is urging voters to not use old voter registration forms in a press statement issued by the state’s elections authority on Tuesday.

The reason for the advisory is because Governor Scott Walker signed into law new legislation that would require the proof of residency of a voter to be disclosed on the official form used for voter registration. Kevin Kennedy, the Director of the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board, said: “State law changed on April 4, and most voters who register must now provide proof of residence. The G.A.B. has revised the form and informed the public about the change. Unfortunately, some organizations which register voters are still using old forms, and it is creating a lot of extra work for clerks and headaches for voters.”

With the new changes GAB Elections Administrator Michael Haas urges all voters that intend to register to vote in this year’s elections obtain a voter registration application through myvote.wi.gov. Haas said: “When you register with MyVote, you can be sure you’re getting the right form, the right instructions and the right clerk’s office address. MyVote lets you start your voter registration online by saving your information in our system. All you have to do is print, sign and mail the form and a copy of a valid proof of residence document to your local clerk, and you’ll be all set. You can also drop off the application at the clerk’s office and show a copy of your proof of residence document.”

The statewide primary is scheduled for August 12th and the general election on November 4th.

Since when were new voters NOT required to show proof of residency?

What, exactly do they accept for proof of residency?

And what effort, if any, is made to validate it? I can create and print off a pretty convincing document that I live on the Moon, and pay my water bill to the appropriate lunar authority.

Yeah, your water bill is up to date, but your air bill is 3 months behind, and we're shutting it off. Your Lunar O2 Authority.

The real reason there are no lunar colonies is because of how tempting it would be to lob rocks at Washington DC

A utility bill in your name, or a bank statement, or tax statement, at the address where you are registering. There is a long list of acceptable docs -- a Kohl's ad doesn't count!

A postcard from “Bed, Bath, and Beyond”, a driver’s license from another municipality, a “letter” from the local office of the Department of Workforce Development (they have someone doing nothing but providing such letters on election day, dutifully typing in the address given to them by the would-be voter), a carbon paper tear-off rental receipt dated that very day, or the word of another voter or the guy driving the van that brought them to the polls.

None of those are currently legal proof of residence, but that does not stop left-leaning poll workers from ignoring the law and accepting them.
