How Obama's immigration push could hand the House to Democrats
The Week ^ | July 4, 2014 | By Bill Scher

Everyone assumes that Republicans will easily hold the House in November. The dominant storyline among the chattering classes centers instead on the possibility that Republicans could seize control of the Senate from Democrats. But the rapidly escalating immigration face-off between President Barack Obama and House Republicans raises the possibility that Democrats could win back the House — even if Republicans do take the Senate

How is that possible? It's simple: There are more competitive House races than Senate races in areas with significant Latino populations.

Last year, David Damore, a polling analyst for the firm Latino Decisions, found that there are 44 congressional districts with Republican incumbents that could be ousted if their Latino constituents flex their electoral muscle.

That may not seem like a lot for a body with 435 representatives. But Democrats only need to flip 17 seats to take over the House. While most observers see that as a bridge too far for Democrats this year, the political terrain in these Latino-strong districts may look different in the fall. Just as we head into the midterms' final two-month sprint, Obama will likely have followed through on this week's pledge to use executive orders to help keep immigrant families together in America.

Obama can't fix the entire immigration system by fiat. He can't unilaterally bestow citizenship on the undocumented. He can't even ensure his executive orders will stay on the books once he vacates the Oval Office in 2017. There will still be a need for Congress to act. And immigration advocates may well turn all their fire on obstructionist House Republicans once Obama has shown he has done all he can without them.

Why would this idiot think Latinos in this country legally want illegals to come in and take their jobs? Why would they automatically want more poor in this country?

Exactly. They don't. In fact, opposition to illegal immigration crosses party lines among majorities of self-identified Republicans and Democrats.

Seems the only people who want "Immigration Reform" (i.e. massive amnesty of illegals) are politicians in Washington on both sides of the aisle who are bound and determined to force this upon an America that almost uniformly does not want it.

The Spanish-language media depicts opposition to immigration reform as anti-Latino bias, full stop, and the adoption of amnesty as a key way for Latinos to flex their muscles.

The leftist spanish media will assure the latinos vote RAT forever -- the illegal hoards know the power than can wield if they vote as a block.

Individualism means nothing to third worlders -- they believe is collectivism and strong-man rule.

Behind the scenes the illegal hoards know clearly in 25 years they will have the political power to completely open the border and out breed and import another 200M spanish speaking third worlds to completely overwhelm English speaking, individual loving, Republic loving Americans.

They fully intend to turn the U.S. into a spanish speaking third world hell hole.

I have Mexican friends born and raised here, parents born and raised here, who dislike illegals. They still vote Democrat every time.

Yeah, but the thing is, the illegals vote Dem because Dems will let them stay. They stay and take the jobs from legal Latinos, and a lot of the lower income African-Americans. Those who lose their jobs go on welfare, and they'll vote Dem to keep the welfare.

So if you think of the country as being divided into those with jobs, those on welfare, and those here illegally, 2 out of 3 have Dems to thank for the pittance they're living on.

IIRC exit polling from the 2012 race showed that immigration was a minor issue in how Latino's voted. The major issue was their support for Obamacare.

As much as they like to say that their wavering immigration stance is based on the best way to pull Latino voters into the GOP, based on past voting patterns reality to be that GOPe support is being driven by big $$$ backers (like the Chamber of Commerce) who are drooling over the impact the cheap labor will have on profit margins.

I disagree. see my post #22.

The spanish speaking media here is hard-core left. Latinos overwhelming vote for the RAT party. Nothing, and I mean nothing, will change that.

I believe 10s of millions more will pour over the border in the coming years. With friends and family we are talking about at least 50M new RAT voters.

The "handlers" will be careful to route these invading hoards to currently red states. With the new RAT voters they will flip enough states permanently to blue.

The evil RAT party desires absolute power. They live to brutally control others.

The evil RAT party knows clearly that only through this illegal anti-English, anti-American invasion can they achieve absolute power -- they will not let this chance slip away.

We are about the witness the true unrecoverable destruction of our Republic as founded.

Unless this INVASION can be stopped soon and reversed, it is truly checkmate for our Republic.

As long as the GOP stops pushing Illegal Alien Amnesty...they will maintain House.

Any deviation into Amnesty and the GOP loses

Pretty DAMN DESPERATE.

Amnesty is DEAD as an issue in 2014. It was zipped up with Cantor in his (political) body bag. But nice try.

If we wanted to lose the House I can think of NO BETTER WAY than to pass Amnesty and have our base STAY HOME. As to lack of Amnesty motivating Hispanics, who are quite sick of the president, and definitely don’t appreciate his relocation of MS-13 to our interior, we shall see - but I suspect they have a lot more important things to deal with.

We will not know how successful (electoral) opposition to the Democrats can be until a party is formed to oppose them.

LOL, you are such a GOPe loving fool. Epic Fail on your part -- open your eyes.

Do you see the GOPe doing anything other than weak words?

As long as the GOPe sits on the sidelines and does NOTHING, they too own it.

Tell Karl Rove and your other RINO buddies hi!

The MOST uber conservative people I know are legal Hispanic immigrants. They make me look like a leftie. And they HATE Obama and illegal immigration.

Statistics show that illegals and their compatriots vote 75-80% RAT.

They have a cultural mindset of going with the strong horse

Spanish media convinces most hispanics that the GOP is the devil. Hence, for now and until we are a spanish decaying democracy hispanics will overwhelmingly vote for the RAT party.

With the illegal hoards it does indeed seem that the RAT party (and GOPe) will be successful in destroying our once great Republic.

Recen polling (up thread) shows that Obama’s support with Latinos has fallen over 20 points...

Polls like this mean nothing. Latinos will continue to vote > 75% for the RAT party -- nothing will change that.
