Russia's parliament has ratified an agreement that will see Moscow write off 90% of cash-strapped Cuba's $35.2bn debt to the Soviet Union, according to the Russian news agency ITAR-Tass.

The agreement was hurried through the State Duma on the last day of its spring session on Friday, a week before President Vladimir Putin's official visit to Cuba, where he will meet Cuban President Raul Castro, and his brother, revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.

See what a nice guy Putin is. But you know those missile bases they use to have there. He might want to reopen them as payback for our intervention in Ukraine. Cold War II

Very nice gesture.

Although there was probably less than a snowball’s chance in h*ll the Russians would ever see a dime.

Myself, I would have taken payment in Havana cigars.

All the more reason to keep those SLBM's and ICBM's in good working order, while working on getting Russia back to its 13th century boundaries. Russia's genocidal impulses appear to have survived the Romanovs and the Bolsheviks without skipping a beat.

This clears the way for Cuba to borrow some more money for the Castro brothers to deposit in Switzerland. It won’t benefit the Cuban people.

Maybe the Cubans will allow a Russian military/naval base. Or some sort of top secret intelligence operation or installation to monitor the US and Latin America. I can think of a lot of things that the Russians could get rather than or in addition to Cuban cigars.

Anyone who thinks this is just a "very nice gesture" is very naive.

May as well write it off as bad debt because Cuba sure isn’t going to pay.

A little history. When the Soviet Union went bankrupt, Russia took on all the assets and liabilities. They immediately negotiated the liabilities down and gained some resources in the process. The assets they kept active, such as these but you can bet they were not released for nothing.

I would raise the question that if the US went bankrupt, who would claim the liabilities and assets?

LOL.

A nice gesture. That’s just funny.

Say it with me, Putinistas: Quid pro Quo.

The only thing Vlad gives away for free is tummy kisses for little boys.

There are too many freepers in love with Vlad these days for your sarcasm to be seen as such. The gentleman who started this thread is one such individual.
