Vaughan Williams: Quintet in DRalph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) was the great English composer to follow Edward Elgar and precede Benjamin Britten. This early piece shows Ralph in his Brahms phase, around the time he wrote his early choral masterpiece Toward the Unknown Region. It dates from 1898, and its written for the unusual combination of piano, violin, cello, clarinet and horn. Its beautiful, fresh and very, very English.
Vaughan Williams: Quintet in D, first movement
A short waltz.
second movement
A gorgeous slow movement.
third movement
A joyful finale.
fourth movement

Brahms: Quartet for Piano and Strings in C minor, Op. 60Brahms wrote his two quartets for piano and strings in his early twenties, and he started another quartet in C# minor in the same period. Thanks to the failure of his first piano concerto he was adrift, and it took a while for him to get back on track. The unfinished quartet was consigned to a desk drawer.
Fast forward twenty years. Brahms, now in the fulness of his success, pulled the unfinished quartet out of the drawer, transposed it down to C minor and finished it. Who should show up at the premiere but Richard Wagner and his wife Cosima! It was an attempt by the Wagners to end the public feud with Brahms, and Jo appreciated the gesture.
From the first note, its apparent that this is muscular Brahms from his amazing and prolific middle period. Rather than play the pedant, Ill let you remember all the things I taught you about sonata format. Listen well and just go with the flow.
Brahms: Piano Quartet in C minor, Op. 60, first movement
After such a heavy first movement, Jo puts a scherzo in second position. You remember your lessons about the format of scherzi, dont you? And what a killer ending!
second movement
The slow movement is little changed from the first draft and is in the remote key of E Major. Its a love song to Clara Schumann, and you can hear the Madonna Complex. When my mother first heard this movement, she said, So thats why Brahms and Clara never did it! The cello line at the opening just breaks your heart.
third movement
The finale is in sonata format and is a lot of fun. The ending is one of Jos best moments.
fourth movement
