Ever heard of a game that ends not when the clock says it ends, but when an official says it ends?

Actually you described American Football, sort of anyway

In a regular soccer game, which normally lasts 90 minutes if there is a tie, the two teams have to play again a week later.

The winning goal was a sheer beauty!

Yeah, Goetze's goal was pretty athletic & smooth.

"fans not quitting"

I did. Forty years ago I used to watch (American) football games back to back. Then after a very large number of boring, low-scoring, run-run-pass-punt games in a row, I asked myself why I watched them. I stopped watching most football games.

After being a fanatic in my youth, I now see maybe four or five games a year. Don't miss it all. It's true, if they eliminated fgs and only gave one point for tds, the average score would be about 3-2. Maybe not even that. Not much more exciting than soccer.

Bernie Goldberg wrote in the National Review that soccer may be the cure for insomnia :)

Isn't that Bernie's job?

As a long time FReeper, sometimes I'm amazed at the number of snotty FR members. Live & let live. Amazing how many people feel compelled to post here about how much they hate soccer, etc., etc. Why not just ignore the thread if you're not into it?

I'm not a huge fan, but watch it from time to time. I do like American football better for sure, but international football is interesting sometimes.

I watched the first half of this game, then caught the last 5 minutes of the second half and the two overtime periods.

As a typical impatient American, I have to say I did get pretty bored in the first half watching Germany pass the ball around at mid field for very long periods of time, presumably "setting up" their offense. IMHO, soccer would seriously benefit from a new rule similar to the "shot clock" in basketball to liven things up significantly (constructive criticism). Force the offense to at least TRY to score in a reasonable period of time, vs. put all the fans to sleep passing for minutes on end. Not that this goes on in all games, but it did in this one.

Oh Lord, mercy me, why Germany???> Look, there are so many decent nations in the world...

None of them apparently made the finals.

Im so excited i forgot to care.

Soccer is a sport for little kids who don’t know how to uses their hands and cripples that don’t have hands to uses. I don’t understand why anyone over the age of 10 watches people run around on a field kicking a ball.

Americans support manly games of contact and scoring.

If I go to a baseball game that is scoreless after nine innings everyone talks about it being a pitcher's duel.

In an American football game, 10.5 minutes of actual play occur during one clock hour of time, and more than three hours of TV time.

In soccer, it's about 90 minutes of play in about 100 minutes of time and less than two hours of TV time.

And guess what? You may not know much about American football, but American football officials can take time off the clock or put more time on the clock if they decide to.

That's one of the things that mystifies me. I'm a NFL fan, and I can (at the proper time--and we all know when) get up, go to the bathroom, make myself a sandwich, and get a beer out of the fridge. During the game. And soccer is "boring?" Gimme a break.

I’ve kept quiet on his soccer hatred for weeks, but you are absolutely ridiculous. We get it; you don’t like soccer and nothing, absolutely nothing you and other Freepers, who don’t like soccer, will make soccer less appealing to those Freepers who do.

You obviously have a lot of free time on your hand to come on THIS soccer related thread as a troll. I know it pisses you off that other conservatives could enjoy a game like soccer because it doesn’t compote with your ideal sports and you (including other soccer haters) come on these threads to tell us how much you don’t like it...well, no one compelled you to click on this thread link.

There are many sports I love watching. I love watching my ‘skins and Capitols, but can’t stand golf or the NBA. But i don’t go on a golf or basketball thread to whine and complain, ad naseum, about how terribly unexciting those sport are...

And I don’t hear anyone complaining about 2-1 or 1-0 hockey games.

Your impression is correct. There are about 1.5 touchdowns per every TV hour of football and 1.4 goals scored per every TV hour of soccer.

I chalk it off as people having the need to feel superior about something. That they feel the need to feel superior about a sport is a subject best left to their therapists. Just roll with it and point out their hypocrisy, if it amuses you.

And I'll note that you left Germany off of your list, for some reason.

I obviously listed the last two and next two Third World Cups. The US holds the all-time attendance record (despite playing fewer games), but FIFA would rather take bribes than give the US the World Cup back.

I am not intersested in "sport" thats allow a cartel of crooks to stage the game in Qatar instead of the USA.

Qualifying for the 2018 World Cup starts in mid- to late-2015, doesn’t it? If you do create a ping list, please add me.

No, but the politics behind who hosts is run by a bunch of corrupt third-world nations that are easily bribed. And countries like the Ivory Coast and Costa Rica get teams.
