Rand Paul vs. Rick Perry: Who's winning?
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | July 14, 2014 | Peter Grier

This Rand Paul versus Rick Perry GOP thunderstorm popped up pretty fast, didn’t it?

It was a dark cloud on the horizon on Friday, when Governor Perry of Texas published an op-ed in The Washington Post that attacked Senator Paul as a foreign policy isolationist. Paul is reluctant to devote more US troops and weapons to Iraq, and Perry used that position to portray the Kentucky lawmaker as the reverse of Ronald Reagan, as someone who wants to hunker down at home rather than lead the world.

“Paul is drawing his own red line along the water’s edge, creating a giant moat where superpowers can retire from the world,” Perry wrote, mockingly.

Then thunder and rain arrived Monday in the form of a Paul reply, posted on Politico. He made fun of Perry’s (snappy) new glasses and complained that the Texan had “fictionalized” Paul’s approach to foreign policy.

There aren’t good options in Iraq, as anyone who’s looked hard at the situation knows, Paul wrote. He supports sending more weapons to the Iraqi government and possibly using US air power to try to stem advances by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS). He doesn’t support sending back large numbers of US troops.

“I ask Governor Perry: How many Americans should send their sons or daughters to die for a foreign country – a nation the Iraqis won’t defend for themselves?” Paul wrote. [...]

Why are we still talking about this leftist kook? Rand Paul is every bit the liberal moonbat that his father is.

….and more to the point, most of his supporters are, and a Paul will do and say anything to keep their internet trolls drooling…...

Of course they will, they figured out years ago that these basement-dwelling potheads would max-out their parents' credit cards during the moRon Paul "moneyballs" and then steal the bedsheets to make moronic "Revolution" banners to hang from overpasses.

Rand Paul is firmly allied with Mitch McConnell, someone who HATES the Tea Party, so I hold Paul in less regard than I did last year. I’m willing to give Perry a second look, but I want to see him in some preliminary debate scrimmages, even with other Republicans. I want to see if he can deal with any kind of live, focused debate, all the while keeping his memory and his dignity intact. I suspect that he will not be pumped full of pain meds this time and a bit more lucid. I think Cruz is letting the time pass for now. He doesn’t have to be in the news every day. It’s still early in the game.

"How many Americans should send their sons or daughters to die for a foreign country – a nation the Iraqis won’t defend for themselves?"

The EXACT SAME THING could have been said about Germany seventy years ago. Should we have sat out that war too?

Iraq is a mess because, as with everything else, Obama has screwed it up.

Rick Perry is a more traditional Reagan Republican. Paul is like his father, with a smoother sales pitch. I don’t trust libertarians on much of anything.

Rand Paul is a whack job like his pappy.

Great ideas, in a fantasy world but, not very pragmatic...

Has Perry DONE anything, other than talk, about HIS border?

Is it a true fact that a Governor is powerless in this situation? Not being a wise guy. Just want to know the truth. I can handle the truth.

Rick Perry is a lame duck governor. But if he truly had any aspiration of bering a serious candidate for the 2016 prez elections; he is blowing them big time.

He could be scoring big time political points if he had called out the National Guard, or made a better attempt at securing the Texas border. His calling on Obama to do something was just useless.

There is a difference between isolationism and non-involvement.

We defend ourselves not the world. Not more one drop of blood or one cent of treasure.

The Lieutenant Governor’s position is the one with real power in Texas, IIRC.

Obama has had 180 golf days since he took office. Every conservative needs to get a golf tee. Stick the tee through the buttonhole of your shirt/blouse. Don’t make a big deal out of it. If somebody asks you what it’s about, just smile and say, “What do you think?”

You’re not from TX. We’re done with Perry and are showing him the door. He wouldn’t be elected dog catchers here.
