A Malaysian passenger airliner with 295 people on board crashed in Ukraine near the Russian border, Interfax cited an aviation industry source as saying on Thursday.

Russian news agency RIAN confirms the plane was shot down by separatists. They presumed it was UA cargo plane.

A plane flying at 33,000 feet rules out anything but a military weapon—not shoulder fired. And there is a daily flight from Amsterdam to KL using the exact same route. Why today and not some other day?

The same flight number does so every day using the same route. Its flight plan has to be approved by all countries on the route.
