China’s Mega Warship Plans Become Clearer With New Photos
Popular Science ^ | 07.23.2014 | Jeffrey Lin and P.W. Singer

Five months after the first pictures surfaced in February 2014, the Type 055 cruiser testing rig at Wuhan has taken significant steps towards completion. The advantages of a land based test rig allow Chinese naval engineers to make cheaper adjustments and modifications to the electronics, compared to rebuilding an expensive cruiser on sea trials. Once launched, the Type 055 cruiser will be among the world's most powerful surface combatant warships, giving the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) a multipurpose warship useful for both blue water expeditionary warfare and anti-access/area denial missions.

While much scaffolding remains, the photos show recent additions include a 130mm H/PJ-38 cannon turret (or a mockup, given the current lack of ammo loading machinery beneath the deck) at the bow. One Type 1130 close in weapons system (CIWS) is located in front the of the bridge superstructure on a platform behind the PJ-38 main gun (the space between the PJ-38 and Type 1130 CIWS would hold 64-72 vertical launch system (VLS) cells). The Type 1130 can fire around 10,000 rounds of two pound shells to intercept missiles flying at Mach 4. To round out the Type 055's defense armament, a HQ-10 air defense launched has been installed in the rear above the helicopter hangar. The gap forward of the hangar and behind the exhaust stacks could hold an additional 48-64 VLS cells.

The Chinese have always spoken of themselves as “The Middle Kingdom”, midway between heaven and earth. Nowadays, that would be midway between the purity of Marxist-Leninism and the filth of the remainder of the world. This ship, and the confiscation of the entire China Sea, would simply be the means by which that relationship would remain the status quo.

It would sure be a damn shame if some of that metal being used was not up to spec...or some of the metal contained defects that were not detected in routine inspection.
Sure would create a lot of problem when that thing got all wound up.

Just sayin'....

Keep buying that Chinese made crap, it’s paying for these new ships.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES sell the Chinese short. They have been around for a long time and are very smart cookies, unlike our present American “leaders”.

How does it stack up against the Peter the Great of the Russian Navy?

And there are STILL PEOPLE, ON THIS SITE that think China and Russia dropped all new weapons development once the Cold War ended, just because we did.

Well, sorry, those two countries, at a minimum, DID NOT have any intention of freezing our advantage in place and pretty soon we are going to get a bloody nose if we keep acting like cowboys (as people here are calling for with Ukraine), but riding around with slingshots, when they have real guns.

I understand our continuous development of new arms and equipment has not abated, but with a simple order to “stand down” or “remain in place” will render them a science museum piece.

Those in control will not do as the Egyptian military did when confronted with the enemy in control of the government. Our current administration is being manipulated by a sophisticated mind. Obviously not the spokesman’s mind.

Every time we drive down the NJ Turnpike, at Mile Marker 41 I ask my daughter if we are near the water...

“No Daddy!” she says.

Then what is that ship doing over there!!!

You would be amazed at how meticulous people can be, if failure of their work at sea results in all the people involved in building the thing getting looked up and getting a bullet behind the ear.

I wish we got as much for our defense dollars as the Chinese or the Russians... Instead we get failures like the F-35.

You forgot to include the graph that shows how far our procurement dollars go in relationship to countries that do not allow unions.

Because that graph blows the “but-but-but-we-outspend-every-other-country” canard back into the Stone Age.

In the US, when a supplier provides something to the govt, they always charge double what they charge to a private sector buyer. Not just defense related or federal govt. Muny govts and school districts also pay more.

When it comes to unions, people tend to exaggerate.

In texas, a right to work state, there are three type shops. Union shops, Non-union shops, and wetback shops. If you need a home AC, the Trane is made in a union shop so it is slightly higher in price but you know that it was made by people with a lot of experience. OTOH, you can save a little money with the Janitrol since it is made in a wetback shop. But not much money. There is a lot more to the cost than just the labor.

Defense contractors in the manufacturing sector are always over-engineered, a non-union job.

Most people tend to look at unions as a monolithic group but there is a lot of variation amongst all the locals and usually in a particular shop, labor relations are actually driven by the steward in that shop.
