GOP lawmaker returns award to protest Chamber of Commerce’s immigration policy

Rep. Kerry Bentivolio (R-Mich.) said Thursday that he refused to accept an award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce because of that group’s position on immigration, and called the Chamber the “biggest pro-amnesty group” in the country.

“The Chamber of Commerce is beholden to special interests and has long since forgotten the main street businesses that struggle everyday to make payroll and keep their company afloat,” Bentivolio said. “It is with great pride that I reject their award, and call on them to stand on the side of America, instead of on the side of China and corporate interests seeking to exploit people for profit.

Even Congressman Lou Barletta (anti-illegal mayor) who is often fiscally liberal, gets awards from the Chamber.

Good for Kerry Bentivolio. This is simply one more reason why the GOPe despises him and would like to see him defeated.

The Chamber claims Bentivolio misrepresents their position and he is desperate because he is 22 pts down in the polls. The Chamber has turned into the AARP type organization. It is ironic when you look at some of the positions both the Chamber and AARP take they are clearly Republican positions, but they continue to support various programs Dems and Obama put out....

Kerry spent his whole term opposing amnesty. He hasn’t flipped like others have. He has been with Steve King’s gang all along.

Is it time to identify local CoC board members and let them know we’ll be boycotting their member businesses until they pressure the US CoC to change its ways?

The US CoC needs to stay out of state and local elections, primaries at least. Local candidates should be picked by local voters and grassroots organizations.

They don’t publish a list on their website, but you can go to individual city Chambers and get a list of members. The Chamber is just a sham like the BBB and other groups that claim they are looking out for you, as long as you pay your DUES. They are very similar to Unions, they take your dues and then support legislation that will hurt you in the long run....

There is a local Chamber of Commerce in every town these days, more than one in some places (Hispanic Chamber of Commerce etc)

I don't know since I am not from Michigan, but I bet the Chamber and others will claim it is his position on immigration. You know like all of the Dems, and even the head of the U.S. Chamber, claiming if the Republicans do not pass reform the Republicans will never win another White House. You know, they are only trying to help the Republican party win future elections....
