Is Lamar in Trouble?
The Weekly Standard ^ | July 28, 2014 | Michael Warren

Lamar Alexander, the two-term Republican senator from Tennessee, is in a strong position to win reelection this November. But only if he can get through his August 7 primary.

Polling has been scarce in the race between Alexander and his GOP primary challenger, state representative Joe Carr, though the incumbent enjoys advantages in fundraising and name recognition (Alexander twice served as governor in the 1980s). An independent poll in January found Carr down by 40 points.

But with Carr getting somewhat of a boost from endorsements by radio host Laura Ingraham and former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, an independent outside group supporting Alexander isn't taking any chances. Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions has a new TV ad running in the Nashville and Knoxville markets that, according to Politico, is a $257,000 buy over the final week and a half of the primary.

I voted today for Joe Carr.

I have begun to notice (in Blount County) a few Joe Carr yard signs and bumper stickers. Much less for Lamar Alexander except for the areas outside of the voting places. A local minor candidate, John D. King, has probably more signs out than either one, all of them along roadways, not in yards. I hope that he doesn't pull many votes from Carr.

A friend of mine went to the Republican headquarters in Blount County today to get a Joe Carr yard sign. He got the very last one. (There are more on order.) There were many Alexander signs available, but they were not moving. That isn't a definitive sign, but not a bad one either—especially since this is Alexander's home county. I'm assuming that Alexander is still the strong favorite, but this one could be close.

Really got my fingers crossed for a Bratt-style surprise. Remember Mississippi!

As hopeful as your report “seems”, you have to consider the people of TN who might as well make Lamar14! their password on all their Internet accounts.

Looking at your posting record, you seem to not just want to downplay Carr’s chances (which is reasonable; I also believe him to be the underdog), but also to hope that he loses. Just my opinion. Whether that is the case or not, your wet blanket posts are definitely not helpful. Agenda?

Lamar! has him a big ol' bus tour going on right now and the reports he is posting show tiny turnouts and most of those are Fat Cats and the country club set. His reports on facebook are inundated with Joe Carr supporters. Could be something happening that will shock the world.

If Lamar wins the primary it doesn’t matter even a tad who wins the election.

We can only hope, but it is TN people we are discussing; is the defeat of Gore in 2000 the only upset they have ever had of much consequence?

I hope Carr wins but can’t see any way that can happen. Hope I am wrong

Lot’s of people in the Knoxville still remember the Whittle deals. The biggest fan of Alexander here is the Liberal managed daily newspaper.

Channel 5 did a brief live report on the 6:00 news from the Lamar! rally in Nashville - and the counter rally by Joe Carr supporters - and it looked like there were very few people listening to Lamar! speak. The shot was relatively tight and they normally do that when there isn’t a large crowd to show off. I figure if there had been a large turnout, they’d want to show us all how much support ol’ Plaid Shirt has.

I don’t do FB so haven’t seen reports about other turnouts on his bus tour. Knowing those reports show tiny turnouts makes me smile.

This is standard M.O. for Theodore R, not just where Carr is concerned.

I didn’t actually see the first fight, I listened to it aboard ship in the Tonkin Gulf. Of course we all watched Howard Cosell go through his metamorphosis of disbelief to acceptance, I never advanced especially after Liston conveniently turned up dead.

I am wrong. The “phantom punch” that “knocked out” Liston was in the second fight not the first. I should know better by now than to rely on memory.

My Dad was a huge boxing fan, having learned it in the Navy and he read up on Cassius Clay in SI in the dentist office. He liked his style and his mouth. When he refused induction though, he rooted against him in every fight.

Not sure if we had the radio on; nor am I sure if the championship fights were televised. I do recall that a lot of them were shown in theatres in the cities - not in our small town, though.

Gillette’s Friday Night Fights was a big deal, though - both for Daddy and Granddaddy.
