A man with a concealed carry permit shot at an armed robbery suspect who was running from a cell phone store in Crestwood, prompting an officer who was also chasing the suspect to take cover, police said.

The man with the permit told police he was about to step inside an AT&T store at 4756 W. Cal-Sag Road around noon Saturday when he noticed the store was being robbed, Crestwood police said in a statement.

The man said he stayed outside to prevent anyone from entering, police said. After he saw the suspect leaving through a back door, he entered the store and ran out the back too, according to police.

Meanwhile, an officer had been flagged down by several people who told them the store was being robbed...

The article doesn't say, but I wonder what the CCW owner will be charged with.

Interfering with an officer in the line of duty.

If the robber didn’t have a gun out and was just running away, it was very irresponsible of this man to discharge his weapon. We don’t need people to trying to be a hero when one isn’t needed. Is it worth possibly shooting an innocent person because a guy is getting away with a few cellphones and cash?

Commendable but, it seems like a good way to shot by a cop who doesn’t know which person with a gun is the perp.

Police officers will simply have to learn, understand, and adapt to the fact that their employers (We, the People) have lost confidence in them and may, at time, take care of business without them.

The “excuse” the CCW owner gave for firing is deplorable.

Reckless and beyond foolish.

I would never use my concealed handgun to shoot a fleeing suspect for fear that I might hit a bystander. I carry mine essentially to use in point blank situations for protection.

Yeah, [I heard that] it was emphasized over and over again in CCHL class - “you’re not a cop”.

You don’t fire at a fleeing suspect.
You don’t get involved in a fight that doesn’t involve you.
Get your family to safety, call 911 and be a good witness.

This is Crook County, Illinois which is looking for any such stories in the media to push for more gun control. The Democrat State’s Attorney is most likely looking into finding some criminal charge to file against the CCW holder.

If anything he should get some retraining specific to CCW holders that they ARE NOT the police and the the firearm is to be used in self-defense.

He is very lucky that the officer did not shoot him.

Nope, not unless he is an immediate threat to peoples’ lives, otherwise you can’t.

According to the news story:

The officer spotted someone running from the rear of the building with a large duffel bag and a gun in his hand, police said.

The man with the permit later told police he ran through the store and fired at the suspect because he had seen the officer run behind the building.

"He was concerned for the safety of the police officer that he saw go behind the building," police said in the statement

No injuries were reported.

And the armed robber was captured. All's well that ends well.

I would think that having a concealed carry permit was for one's own protection. It is not a license to be an on-the-spot law enforcer.

It would be okay for a George Zimmerman to pull out a gun and shoot someone who was beating him senseless. It would not be okay for a George Zimmerman to follow a robber out into the street and play cop.

f the robber didn’t have a gun out and was just running away

.....then the second thing you have to look for is what kind of running shoes he had on.

I do not know of anywhere in the Illinois State Statutes that allows a private citzen to use deadly force against a fleeing, not only Felon, but a fleeing anybody.!

Considering the source of this story, a fact check is in order.

But If true, the CCW owner messed up big time.
